  • Marines get off beach

The Japanese soon opened fire and many Marines suffered as the first casualties. 760 marines made the charge across to the other side of Iwo Jima, gaining a considerable amount of ground.
  • Landing on Iwo Jima soil

At 8:59(one minute ahead of schedule), the Third Marine Division, the Fourth Marine Division, the Fifth Marine Division, and the V Amphibious Corps landed on the beach. They were not fired upon immeadiately, for General Kuribayashi's plan was to wait for the beach to be filled with Marines and their equipment.
  • The Raising of the Flag

Joe Rosenthal took a picture as Franklin Sousley, Harlon Block, Michael Strank, John Bradley, Rene Gangon, and Ira Hayes raised the American flag on top of Mount Suribachi. It is one of the most recognizable images of war, and probably the most reproduced photo of all time.
