"Flowers for Algernon"

  • Progress Report 1

Charlie Gordon, 37, was born on February 20, 1928. He was chosen to undergo an operation to make him intelligent. He is not completly literate, but is motivated: "I want to be smart . . . I have nuthing more to rite no so I will close for today."
  • Progress Report 2

Today, Charlie had a test. I would not say he failed it, but he did not do very well. This just proves that the operation will be even more extroidanary if it works. Charlie believes that we will not use him now.
The "raw shok" test consisted of a man in a room, who was holding cards with inkblots. He asked Charlie what he saw, and Charlie said some inkblots. Charlie "tryed hard but . . . still couldnt find the pictures [he] only saw the ink." He believes he failed.
  • Progress Report 3

Today, Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur went to see Charlie. Charlie believed that it was his fault that he failed the first test, enforcing his naivte. Charlie finds comfort in his teacher, Ms. Kinnian, who reports that Charlie "was her bestist pupil in her adult nite scool becaus [he] tryed the hardist and [he] reely wanted to learn."
  • Progress Report 3

Charlie's Thematic Apperceptation Test today went well. We have a good idea what personality he is, although he laughed when we told him. After, we took him to see Algernon, and Charlie lost against the mouse in a race through the maze. He made me laugh today. Charlie said that it was "amazed" and he and Algernon had the same "amazed to do."
  • Progress Report 4

We have decided to use Charlie! He is so excited he can hardly write. Dr. Nemur and Dr. Srauss had a bit of an agrument about it though. Dr. Strauss agreed with me, and said the Charlie had great motavation.
  • Progress Report 6

Charlie had his operation today. Dr. Strauss did it while he was sleeping. Charlie has not made much improvement. He still has a "very bad memary for spelling."
  • Progress Report 8

Charlie went back to the factory today. Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur agreed that he could. I'll be good for Charlie. I think he misses his job and his friends. Eventually, he may even be "smart perminent."
  • Progress Report ?

Charlie burst into his classroom today and shouted, "I beat Algernon! I dint even know I beat him until Burt the tester told me. Then the second time I lost because I got so exited I fell off the chair before I finished. But after that I beat him 8 more times. I must be getting smart to beat a smart mouse like Algernon. But I dont feel smarter." We are all so excited, for him, and for the experiment.
  • Progress Report 11

Charlie learned why everyone laughs at him today. He's gaining intelligence, but he is still not at the level of his peers. He wrote in his journal: "I feel a lot better today, but I guess I'm still a little angry that all the time people were laughing and making fun of me because I wasn't so smart. When I become intelligent like Dr. Strauss says, with three times my I.Q. of 68, then maybe I'll be like everyone else and people will like me.
  • Progress Report ?

I believe Charlie is fond of Miss Kinnian. As he gains intelliegence, I catch him staring at her and yesterday he invited her to dinner. I was so surprised Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur allowed it. Charlie wrote in his journal: "I don't understand why I never noticed how beautiful Miss Kinnian really is. . . I think from the beginning I had the feeling that she was an unreachable genius. . . I'm in love with Miss Kinnian."
  • Progress Report ?

Charlie has reached his intellectual peak. He tried to have a conversation with Miss Kinnian the other day, staying away from the "intellectual stuff" and only on "the most basic level," but he kept talking about scholarly stuff.
  • Pregress Report ?

Charlie wants to be a teacher. Well, not exactly. He wants to use his intelligence to "work in the fiends of increasing human intelligence levels." He wants to do good.
  • Progress Report ?

Charlie's intelligence has brought him to write a paper. He has realized that he is regressing, as Algernon has. As he does, Charlie identifies each stage as he reaches it. Algernon died. Charlie "put Algernon's body in a cheese box and buried him in the back yard" and cried.
  • Progress Report ?

Charlie has regressed. He's leaving New York. The experiement has failed. This will be my last entry, just like Charlie's: Good-by Miss Kinnian and Dr Strauss and evreybody.
And P.S. please tell Dr Nemur not to be such a grouch when pepul laff at him and he would have more frends. Its easy to make frends if you let pepul laff at you. Im going to have lots of frends where I go.
P.P.S. Please if you get a chanse put some flowrs on Algernons grave in the bak yard....
