Rachel is a fifteen-year-old girl with a brown chestnut horse named Peaches. She lives with her mother, her grandmother, her father, and her older brother James.

Rachel sneaks out of her house early in the morning and takes her horse Peaches on a ride. She eventually hears a train and decides to race it, winning by about a foot.

Rachel has just found out she is moving from her home in Wesleydale, Illinois to Boston, and that she has to sell her horse.

Rachel's brother takes her to a fire station in Boston and she saves a mare named the Governor's Girl from being killed after she got badly burned in a fire. The owner of the horse was going to shoot it and put it out of its misery.

Rachel cares for the Governor's Girl with the help of the town veterinary, Mr. Stead.

Rachel's grandmother passes away in her sleep. Rachel's family and most of the people they know in town attend the funeral.

A fire breaks out in a livery with horses inside of it. This leads to a much bigger fire and is one of the most famous fires in U.S. history. (The Chicago Fire)

Rachel has successfully healed the Governor's Girl and is now ready to let her go back to the fire station. She gets another horse, however, when a newborn Colt breaks his leg and has to be put in a sling.
