It allowed resources to be transported across the nation and people could settle across the country. The development of railroads secured fast transportation. Railroads were vital in the transportation of troops, food, supplies, and weapons during the civil war.

    Women's suffrage had been a major idea and followed since 1848 but didn't gain major popularity until 1890. Women were fighting for equality for voting. Until the 19th amendment was created and ratified on August 26, 1920; women did not have the right to vote.

    The Gold rush was a major movement of people migrating to the west coast in search of riches. California was the most popular waypoint for hopeful people at the time. The travel across the west was perilous and gold was not guaranteed for anyone. Many people chased dreams only to fail. Immigrants and Indians were discriminated against during this time and the frenzy died off around 1855.

Reconstruction started after the civil war when rights for free slaves were created, and the Government made the confederate states swear loyalty to the Union. This is important because this was the first big step towards the country being whole and it was the first time that slavery was absolutely abolished. This started the beginning for freedom of blacks.

    Jim Crow laws

    Jim Crow laws are laws set by racist lawmakers trying to oppress black people. The laws consisted of complete segregation in buses, trains, water fountains, bathrooms, and restaurants. They also enforced curfews, segregating schools, and even jobs. Jim Crow specifically targeted blacks in the use of literacy tests and poll taxes. These laws were specifically placed to oppress because even though slavery had ended, some whites still believed that blacks were truly inferior.

    On May 1st, 1886, Workers across the nation went on strike demanding they have better working conditions. The conditions they required were 8-hour workdays. It started a peaceful protest then turned bloody when police tried to break up the 80,000 strong demonstrations. This is one example of the many demonstrations created in order to create better working conditions and wages demanded by many.

    The 14th amendment was created July 9th, 1868. This amendment granted citizenship to all regardless of race or religion. If you were born in the United States or naturalized (process of acquiring citizenship), you were a legal United States citizen. This was huge for the many thousand slaves residing in the United States at the time.

    The Gilded age

    The Gilded Age was the time period between 1870 until about 1900. This time period was known for being a corrupt time because of struggles the average American faced being overlooked because of advancements in technology, and society. Corporations benefited greatly from advancements while the workers lived below the poverty line. Unionization would occur and workers would later demand better wages and working conditions.

    Urbanization and Industrialization marked the time when the United States was rapidly changing from an agricultural society to an industrialized society. The industrialization benefited the country because it sped up the time of making and distributing resources. Advancements in transportation, living areas, and construction were the highlights of the time. Most money-making work was done in cities and through the use of factories and commanded through Highrise buildings.

    Muckraking

    Muckraking is the spread of information by the media to try and inform the viewers, readers of scandalous things happening. Upton Sinclair is one of the most famous “Muckrakers” for his work in his book “The Jungle”; where he exposed the way that immigrants were being taken advantage of. This book blindsides the nation and people began to wake up to the mistreatment of many and caused corporations to change the way they run things.

    The Spanish-American War

    The Spanish American war started when the USS Maine was sunk off the coast of Cuba. Yellow journalists fueled the public opinion and helped push the agenda for war. Relations with America and Spain were already dwindling with Spain's involvement in the occupation of Cuba. The idea of Cuba being under control resonated with Americans and created the push for War. This is important because it shows how easy it is to let the media sway an entire nation into one thought process.

    The Great migration was when African Americans made their way north into cities in pursuit of jobs and places to live. They left their rural southern lifestyles to escape racial persecution and to also obtain education, and to get away from the Jim Crow laws that were commonplace at the time. This movement is known as one of the biggest migrations of people the country has ever seen. 1910-1970

    WW1 was started because of the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand . The United States, Britain, France, Russia, Japan, and Italy were the allied forces as Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey were the central powers. This conflict was fought over the loss of the Archduke and countries declaring war then pulled their allies into the war. This is important because it was the first major world conflict and many lives were lost. 7/24/1914-11/11/1918

    The Prohibtion

    The Prohibition was when Alcohol was outlawed in the United States. Famous things like “Bootleggers” and “Speakeasies” were created during this time period. Speakeasies were the places you would go that would serve and distribute alcohol and Bootleggers were the ones who supplied the alcohol to the speakeasies and other establishments. This is important because it foreshadows what we are going through with the war on drugs.

    Black Tuesday is the day when the stock market crashes. It crashed because of many factors; the one that pushed the downfall the most was the unrestricted use of credit. All of the unrestricted use of credit to the general public made the market “bubble” and ultimately made the prices rise exponentially.

    The Great Depression was the time after the stock market crash when the entire nation was suffering. The Great Depression created a decade of poverty and malnutrition for thousands in the US. Things got so bad that communities consisting of shacks called “Hoovervilles” were created to house the displaced people.

    The Holocaust

    The Holocaust was the name for the genocide that was instituted on millions of innocent lives by the Nazi party lead by Adolf Hitler. The holocaust was mainly executed on Jews but also included political opponents, Gays, Disabled people, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witness and many more minorities. This mass extermination was implemented to “cleanse Germany '' of bad genetics. Approximately 6 million jews were slaughtered before and during the war. 1933-1945
  • The Start of WW2

    Pearl Harbor started the war for the United States on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese performed a surprise attack on the US naval station in Hawaii. 2403 American navy, marine, and army members were killed during the attack and 1000 were wounded along with the destruction of 8 battleships and 169 planes. President Roosevelt described the atrocity as “A date which will live in infamy” in his speech the next day when addressing the nation on the attack.

    The end of World War 2 came after the United States dropped 2 Atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. War in the European Theatre had already come to an end when the Nazis signed an unconditional surrender on May 7,1945. Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender on September 2,1945 after the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima (August 6, 1945) and after the bomb on Nagasaki (August 9, 1945) was dropped.
