Evolution of the national citizenry

  • Dred Scott v. Sanford

    The Supreme Court Established that slaves and African Americans are not citizens of the United States. Slaves were not entitled to the rights of citizens.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    The new president Abraham Lincoln was able to free the slaves using executive order.
  • The 13th Amendment

    The 13th Amendment abolishes slavery in the United States.
  • The Civil Rights Act

    All persons born in the united States were citizens of the United States and the State in which they lived in.
  • The 14th Amendment

    Equal treatment for African Americans after the Civil War, provided equal protection for all persons born, and legal residence of the United States
  • The 15th Amendment

    Granted that African American men were able to vote.
  • Angell Treaty of 1880

    Allowed the United Sates to restrict migration of certain Chinese workers. It moved the immigration policy closer to outright exclusion of the Chinese.
  • Immigration Act of 1903

    Law that identified anarchist as targets for exclusion and made provision for their removal id denied after entry
  • The 17th Amendment

    Provided the direct election of United Sates senators by the voters of the states.
  • The 19th Amendment

    Unable to deny voting based on sex. Granted women the right to vote.
