Evolution of the Light Bulb

  • Oil Lamp

    Oil Lamp
Although oil lamp was used since supposedly 70.000B.C., the design we are familiar with was invented around 1780. This design of oil lamp was created so that it is safe for people to carry around indoor as well as outdoor. This design helped tremendously to not let the light die out by wind. Aime Argand, from Swiss, created this design in the 18th century, but the specific date was not recorded. http://www.historyoflamps.com/lamp-history/history-of-oil-lamps/
  • Arc Lamp

    Arc Lamp
Humphry Davy, from Great Britain, created an electric lamp by using volts from a battery and two charcoal rods. His creation produced light that was brighter than one thousand candles.
Using his invention, Paris became the first one to attempt lighting their streets using electric lamps.

  • The Geissler tube

    The Geissler tube
Heinrich Geissler, from Germany, created a glass cylinder that produced light by using gasses such as neon, argon, or air with conductive fluids. When a high voltage is presented, an electrical current flows through the tube, making it shine. This created the ability to create different colors and lighting effects with light. It eventually developed into neon lighting technology.

  • Thomas Edison's Design

    Thomas Edison's Design
Since the Arc Lamp created by Humphry Davy produced too intense light for regularly use, and was too short-lasting, Thomas Edison worked to evolve it. He used platinum filament and carbonized bamboo to create a 16-watt lamp that lasted 1,200 hours.

  • Tesla

    Tesla
Originally, Nikola Tesla worked with Thomas Edison on light bulb, but later on he moved on to his own project of wireless electric lamp. By doing so, he tried to create light without involving physical attachment to a power-source such as battery. Using the Tesla Coil, he was able to create wireless electric lamp, and after that, he moved on to creating high-voltage electricity to apparently blow up New York.

  • Fluorescent

    Fluorescent
Edmund Germer, from Germany, created the high-pressure mercury-vapor lamp, or called fluorescent light. He coated the tube of an arc lamp with fluorescing powder and transformed UV into light. It's said to be unfit for daily use, although his invention of fluorescent light was very efficient, because of the unpleasant color of the emitted light. http://www.edisontechcenter.org/Fluorescent.html
  • LED Light Bulb

    LED Light Bulb
Nick Holonyak, from America, created a LED light bulb that operate a visible semiconductor alloy laser. By this LED light bulb replaced almost all the light-sources there is, because of it's efficiency as well as the quality of light it has. http://www.gelighting.com/LightingWeb/emea/news-and-media/news/First-LED-by-the-GE-engineer-Nick-Holonyak.jsp
  • Spiral Fluorescent Light

    Spiral Fluorescent Light
Edward Hammer, from American, bent the fluorescent tube into a spiral shape, creating the first compact fluorescent light. By doing so, it made the emitting light from the fluorescent light more favorable, also made it even more efficient in using since it was long lasting.
