    Women in around 1650 would put their hair back with a ribbon and pins. When young girls would wear colorful ribbon it would be considered a form of status. But when women would wear ribbons it was seen casual fashion wear.

Thomas Hancock, considered the father of the rubber industry,created the first elastic item which was rubber gloves, shoes and stockings. His success was duplicated by Stephen Perry, a British businessman who obtained the patent for the rubber band on St. Patrick's Day in 1845.

    The most recent variation of the hair tie is the "scrunchie," which is an elastic band sewn inside bunched, colorful fabric. This kind of hair tie has all the flexibility of a rubber band and all the comfyness of a hair tie. It can also come in many variations because you can easily attach things like ribbons, charms, gemstones, jewelry or other items.
