  • First Department Store

    The first department store, Le Bon Marche, opens in paris. American versions began to emerge about ten years later.
  • Burberry

    British label Burberry is founded. Burberry is still in operation today under four labels. Perhaps not typically thought of along side the other designers in the timeline, but Burberry Prorsum is one of my all time favorite fashion houses.
  • Haper's Bazar (Bazaar)

    The first issue of famous fashion magazine Haper's Bazaar is printed.
  • No. 5

    Coco Chanel. Possibly the most iconic name in fashion. She liberated women and forever changed the world of fashion. Chanel remains one of the most desireable labels out there.
  • VOGUE

    Probably the most well known fashion magazine in the world. Vogue today is circulated worldwide and is always the first place to look for all things fashion.
  • Christian Dior

    Fashion Designer Christian Dior was born.
  • Androgyny

    The flapper style greatly changed women's fashion. Bobs became the new hairstlye for young women the the "garconne" look spread around the world.
  • YSL

    Yves Henri Donat Mathieu Saint Laurent was born in algeria. He combined elegant couture with sharp menswear. After a short stint as the head of Dior he went on to create his own fashion empire. He died in 2008 of brain cancer.
  • "It has shit in it"

    Ralph Lauren (Lifshitz) is born. He trademarked the preppy chic style known globally today.
  • Klein, Calvin

    Calvin Klein was born. Known for his minimalist designs and sexy ads, Calvin Klein rew\mains one of the most influential American designers ever.
  • NY Fashion Week

    The First ever New York Fashion Week is held. It was originally put on to give fashion outlet to industry insiders unable to travel to Paris due to the war. It gave a major boost to American designers, and they began to be known on a more global level.
  • Versace

    Gianni Versace was born. His over the top designs and glamorous style have an incredible influence everywhere.
  • The "New Look"

    After WWII, fashion was hardly a concern for most women. Dior saught to change that with his "New Look." It overempasized the shape of a woman's body and brought back real femininity. It also started what we know today as "Old Hollywood Glam."
  • Halston Heritage

    First Halston boutique is opened. Halston was a major symbol during the seventies and continues to be a prominent designer today.
  • McQ

    Innovative fashion designer Alexander McQueen was born. It is impossible to measure the influence McQueen held. His designs were full of juxtaposition and were in a league of their own.
  • The Death of Coco

    Coco Chanel died. Fashion is still recovering.
  • Miu Times Two

    Prada starts new line called Miu Miu. Its girls designs and out there prints set it aside in my mind. It doesn't hold the same power in its name as say Givenchy, but it is one of my favorites ever.
  • A World at Loss

    Alexander Mcqueen dies.
