    Also can be known as The Great Charter of the Liberties of England. Its a charter that was issued in Latin. Its a document that was imposed under the King of England to limit his powers and protect the rights
  • Mayflower Compact

    This document was actually lost so they made three different copies. The point of this was for the Pilgrims to settle to obtain permission from the English authorites to settle in Virginia.
  • Thomas Hobbes (Leviathan)

    This book refers to the structure of society and legitimate government. It was written during the English Civil War.
  • John Locke (Two Treatises on Government)

    The first treatise is focused on Sir Robert Filmer the aruments between him and John Locke. The second treatise talks about the theory of civil society. All men are created equal.
  • English Bill of Rights

    This limited the power of the English sovereign. It was written as an act of parliament.
  • Jean-Jacques Rousseau (The Social Contract)

    This book talks about the best way to establish a political community. This inspired political reforms in Europe, especially in France.
  • Montesquieu (On the Spirit of Laws)

    This treatise was all of Baron de Montesquieu's theories and his view of things. The most important was the respect for the role of history and shaping a nation's political structure.
  • Treaty of Paris

    This Treaty ended the Revolutionary War and recognized the American Independence. This was a negotiation between the U.S. and Great Britain.
  • Voltaire (Treatise on Tolerance)

    In this Treatise, it calls for tolerance between religions, and religious fanaticism. Voltaire was a great student and educated by Jesuits.
  • Cesare Beccaria (On Crime and Punishment)

    This focuses along the lines of mental anguish and morl dilemmas of a boy named Rodion Raskolnikov. He commits a murder to test his own hypothesis.
  • First Continental Congress

    All colonies sent delgates except for Georgia to meet at the Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia. The congress met to dicuss options like a boycott of British trade, rights and grievances, etc.
  • Second Continental Congress

    Many of the same delegates at the First Continental Congress were to attend the Second.This is where the Congress voted to create the Continental Army out of the military units.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Drafted by Thomas Jefferson, this is one of the nation's most cherished symbol of liberty and Jefferson's most enduring monument. He expressed the convictions in the minds of Americans.
  • Articles of Confederation

    This was the first written constitution of the United States. Under these articles, the states remained sovereign and independent.
  • Shay's Rebellion

    This Rebellion was a name given to a series of protests in 1786 and 1787 by American farmers against local enforcement of tax collections. This rebellion was the most serious in Massachusetts.
  • Philadelphia Convention

    A Convention to talk about problems in governing the United States. The result of the Convention was the creation of the United States Constitution.
