    He was born in Litchfield, Connecticut. He was the first child of Joseph and Mary Allen. He was a frontiersman, soldier, and statesman.
  • Fort Henry

    Fort Henry
    Ethan volunteered for Militia Service. In response to French movements, his units headed to Fort Henry. When they were about to reach it, they were told it already fell so they turned around.

    He married Mary Brownson. It was supposed to be an unhappy marriage, but they managed to stay together until Mary died. They had five children but only two of them grew to be an adult.

    Green Mountain Boys

    He was the leader of the Green Mountain Boys. He was the leader at the Battle of Lounge-Point in 1775and the capture of Fort Ticonderoga. The Green Mountain Boys were later said to be the founding fathers of Vermont.

    He lived in Salisbury. He met a man named Thomas Young and wrote a book with him. The book was an attack on organized religion. Thomas died and he published the book after many years.

    He started studying under a minister because he wanted to go to Yale. His father died. He had to stop studying to support his family.
  • Fort Ticonderoga

    Fort Ticonderoga
    He and Benedict Arnold led men into Fort Ticonderoga and captured it because of surrender. A small detachment captured the nearby Fort Crown-point on May 11. On May 18, Arnold and 50 men attacked Fort Saint-Jean on the Richelieu River in southern Quebec.

    He served as a colonel in the Continental Army. In September 1778, he presents Vermont claims for being a state to Congress in Philadelphia. In July, 1780, he receives his first letter from loyalist John Beverly Robinson leading to the Maldivian Negotiation.

    He was a major general in the Vermont Republic Militia. After returning home, he got involved with politics. He did some negotiating with the British.
  • Ethan's Death

    Ethan's Death
    He died on February 12th, 1789. He died in Burlington, Connecticut after returning from his cousin's house. Around 1850, his grave marker was stolen.
