    When Selena was 6 years old, her father, Abraham, noticed that she had a gift. While teaching his son the guitar, Selena walked in and began singing with her father. He wasted no time & formed a family band. In 1982, he opened a restaurant & the band, Selena y Los Dinos, would perform there. They performed a lot. Later on, they were signed to Freddie Records. In Erikson's fourth stage, the child learns to be productive & accept evaluation of their efforts or becomes discouraged & feels inferior.

    In 1989, Selena joined EMI Records. She was 18 years old & had a major record company supporting her. Being in the family band helped her discover who she wanted to be & what style she was going for. Erikson's 5th stage is identity vs. role confusion. It occurs during adolescence. Adolescents search for a sense of self & personal identity, through an intense exploration of personal values & goals. This is a major stage of development where the child has to learn the roles to occupy as an adult.

    In 1992, Selena married Chris Perez. He was the lead guitarist in her band; they met in 1990. Together they shared in the success & growing popularity. However, 3 years after their wedding, Selena was murdered in 1995 by the president of her fan club. Today, Chris continues to keep her legacy alive. Erikson's sixth stage takes place between the ages 18 to 40 years. In this stage, we explore relationships leading toward long-term commitments & share ourselves more intimately with others.
