The persecution of protestants made the Maria's popularity fell down,even though she had to overcome several obstacles during her reign such as a flu epidemic.

England lost the city of Calais, the French took those territories. This was because Maria lent Felipe money and an army. After it, there was a tension in the English government and also, Maria was depressioned because she believed that she was pregnant but once again it was a false alarm.

The misfortunes that Maria suffered and the absence of her husband made her sick. In October 1558 the queen began to suffer from headaches and fever, so she made a testament where she left everything to her sister Isabel.
On November 17, 1558 Maria I died at the age of 42 and the cause of it is not clear.
