Emma heard some suprising news, the following morning at work. A trooper from Company B came to visit a sick friend, and the men talked a about a newcomer. Emma couldn't stand listening. Asking questions she learned that the officers first name was James, and that he was very tall man with sandy hair and a bushy mustache. -
Good News into Bad.
Emma decided to go see James. Emma could see Company B in the distance, but something caught her eye behind the last row of tents in a cleared field,and heard a familiar ritual. A cluster of soliders,bearheaded, stood around a mound of earth while a chaplain read a psalm. His voice trailed thru Emma's head. "Commit thy way unto the Lord. Trust also in him and he shall bring it to pass...... -

As Emma looked at herself in the mirror and started laughing she pulled it off she was a man now. She was a small, gawky, brown-skinned man with a crown of woolly black hair. -
Now A Slave
Emma turned into a slave named Cuff . A Confederate officer on a horse came trotting up to Cuff and said "Why aren't you working"? he said "Who do you belong to"? Cuff bobbed his head and put on his foolish smile, "Don't belong to nobody, mastuh. Ah's free, far as ah know". The officer frowned "THere is no free people around here", he growled. And as that Cuff started working, under the hot sun,shouldrs aching, Cuff filled barrow after barrow of rocks. -
The spy's second day.
Emma's second day as a spy was not as bad.His was assigned to a droup that took meals to the troops manning the heavy artillery. -
