Ellen's Mama dies in a self-medicated sleep while laying next to Ellen. Ellen's Dad is part to blame because he did nothing to stop it. Ellen really loved her mom, she felt the need to protect her mom from her dad. -

Ellen lives with her teacher
Ellen's teacher notices her bruises on her arms from her dad. She immidatley takes action and has Ellen living with her as a temporoary foster home. Ellen's teacher and her husband are hippies and Ellen is actaully happy living with them. -
Ellen's goes to live with her mama's mama
Ellen's grandmother fights for custody of Ellen when she finds out Ellen is living with her hippie teacher. Ellen does not like her grandmother as first, she is a very cold woman and shows no love. Ellen is very unhappy living here. -
Ellen meets Mavis
Ellen is forced to work in the cotton fields her grandmother owns with all the Negros. While there, Ellen meets an old negro women named Mavis who tells her stories about her mom from when she was younger. -
Ellen's dad dies
While living with her grandmother Ellen learns that her dad has passed away. She isn't really sad at all. -
Ellen's mama's mama dies
Ellen's grandmother falls gravely ill . Ellen must take care of her, but it proves to not be enough and she dies. Ellen is sad because while Grandmother was a hard woman she did honestly care about Ellen. After while Ellen didn't mind living there, but now she was forced to find another home. -
Ellen goes to live with Nadine and Dora
Ellen goes to live with her aunt Nadine and cousin Dora. She is unhappy here because they ridicule her and treat her as if she is dumb. -
Ellen gets into a fight with Nadine and Dora
On Chirstmas Day Ellen presents Nadine and Dora with her homemade paintings as gifts to them. To her face Nadine and Dora pretend to like them, but Ellen overhears them ridiculing the paintings and plotting to ruin them so they don't have to display them. Ellen is furious with them and decides she wants nothing to do with them and wants to run away. -
Ellen goes to the foster home
After Ellen's fight with Nadine and Dora she seeks refudge at a foster home she sought out and asks them to take her in. -
Ellen talks to a therapist
Ellen's "new mom" the foster mom convinces Ellen that it would be a good idea for her to talk to someone about her life and how she's feeling. After and little persuasion and bribery from New Mama Ellen deceides to go. -
Ellen invites Starletta over
Ellen finally has a safe home where she can invited her friend, Starletta over. Ellen is finally happy at her foster home and feels loved and cared for.
