El Hierro Energy Independence Timeline

  • The Gorona del Viento El Hierro consortium was formed.

The Gorona del Viento El Hierro consortium was formed.
The Gorona del Viento El Hierro consortium was made up of islanders, students, and faculty from the Canary Islands Institute of Technology, as well as Spanish representatives from both private cooperation Endesa, and the Spanish government. The purpose of the group was to evolve the island to be energy independent, meaning they rely only on themselves for electricity, which is also renewable energy sources such as hydro power or wind power.

El Hierro adopts a plan for shifting to renewable energy ,however over 6,000 tonnes of diesel was imported and consumed by diesel generators by El Hierro. These generators contribute over 18,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.
  • El Hierro completes a pump storage hydroelectricity system.

El Hierro completes a pump storage hydroelectricity system.
El Hierro completes the construction of a pump storage hydroelectricity system. A pump storage hydroelectricity system pumps water up to an upper reservoir with wind power, where it is stored. On days with little wind, or whenever needed, the water can be let out, to flow downhill into a lower reservoir, generating electricity via hydro power.
  • El Hierro greatly reduces harmful emissions due to new system.

El Hierro greatly reduces harmful emissions due to new system.
El Hierro's pump storage hydroelectric system, along with a wind farm, allowed El Hierro to reduce it's CO2 emissions by 26,000 tons per year, and oil usage by ~ 40,000 barrels per year. This allows El Hierro to reduce toxic waste, oil spills, as well as improve the air quality.
