Protestant Revolution
Education became an important necessity. As people separated themselves from the church, they realized education could support meritocracy. This made birth circumstances less important; one could become successful solely based on their ability, rather than their lineage. The movement toward educating all men began. -
American Revolution
The ending of British rule allowed colonists to establish a new nation; to create a new government and culture. This newfound independence fostered national allegiance and a commitment to build an American culture, starting with education. Education became, and still is, a vehicle for ingraining and maintaining American Culture. -
Compulsory Education Begins
From 1842 until 1918, all states passed laws requiring attendance at schools. This allowed new immigrants and lower class citizens to have access to an education; these laws laid the groundwork for public education, today, while preventing child labor. -
Brown vs. Board of Education
The Supreme Court ruling in favor of of desegregation had a huge impact not only on education, but within society. African Americans needed to be seen as equals, and treated as such. Allowing African Americans to be educated with their white counterparts would give them better schools, opportunities, and educational outcomes. -
Educating Special Education Teachers
The Education of Special Education Teachers paved the way for the many public laws enacted to educate children with disabilities. These laws forced public schools to provide students with disabilities the same access to education that "normal" students had. This domino-effect on public law led to inclusion, an integral part of our public schools, today.
