  • Mass. free Public Schooling

    Law is passsed allowing freee public education available to all.
  • Schools for Minorities Open

    1837 the first all girls college was opened- Mount Holyoke Female Seminary.
    In the same year the first higher learning center for African Americans opens, now called Cheyney College.
  • First Public Library Opens

    Boston, the first public library supported by taxes is opened.
  • Plessy V. Ferguson

    The supreme court states that "seperate but equal" is acceptable, thus segregating schools.
  • S.A.T.'s

    First Scholastic Aptitude Test was administered. It was based on the Army Alpha test.
  • Great Depression

    The great depression hits education hard, cutting funding for education, jobs, and salaries.
  • Brown V. Board of Education

    Landmark case reversed Plessy V. Fergunson, desegregating schools.
  • The Elemntary and Secondary Education Act

    This act helped establish support for low-income students, bilingual students, and established the Title 1 program.
  • Department of Education

    The D.O.E. is formed to aid states in establishing effective schooling in 1868. However, the Board is soon reduced to an office; untill Jimmy Carter makes the D.O.E. a cabinent level department.
  • No Child Left Behind

    NCLB act setups a system of hish-stakes testing that forces schools to reach certain progress marks.
  • The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act

    Provides 90 billion dollars to go towards education, including the Race to the Top program. Stimulus supported amny different educational programs.
