    Child Study Movement
    The Child Study Movement was an important event in the history of public education because it shifted the focus of education from the subject to the student. With this shift, teachers were able to better understand the needs and development of their students to ensure they are giving the best, most effective education. G. Stanley Hall initiated this shift and emphasized that education is a way to develop students' personalities and minds, instead of only their academics.
  • Cardinal Principles Report

    Cardinal Principles Report
    The Cardinal Principles Report changed public education because it allowed secondary education students, which was growing more diverse, to learn a variety of subjects. Instead of everyone learning the same thing, students were able to decide if they wanted to take life skills, job training skills, and physical activity courses, all while learning the same core subject matter as their peers. This report combined core subjects of common knowledge with student choice.

    Brown v. Board of Education
    The Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling was essential in the history of public education because it allowed all students, regardless of race, to have access to the same quality of education. This ended segregation with a large amount of resistance, but it provided every child the same rights to their education. The Supreme Court ruling helped to reduce discrimination against African Americans, although it didn't stop discrimination completely.

    Public Law 85-926
    Public Law 85-926 improved the quality of education provided to children with disabilities; it was essentially desegregation of students with and without disabilities. This event is important because it showed that all students deserve to be educated in the same way, regardless of intellectual, emotional or physical ability. This law made it possible for students with disabilities to learn with their peers and make them feel more included in their education setting.

    American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
    The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was important for public education because it put more funding and resources into the education of children, therefore likely to improve their futures. It emphasized the importance of providing quality teachers and administration for students, which improves the quality of education provided. Students were able to feel more comfortable knowing their teachers were of high quality, which improved their self esteem and academic success.
