    Pilgrims Come To America
    The pilgrims only included a few people with learning skills. The most important thing to learn was how to preserve their religion and cultural integrity. Families and churches were responsible for educating the children as they could. Their idea was to mold people.
  • Horace Man Creates the first State Board of Education

    Horace Man Creates the first State Board of Education
    As the first appointed Secretery for the State Board of Education. He convinced the American people that education should be universal, free, and nonsectarian. He wanted the focus to be character building, civic virtue, and social efficiency. He was known as "The Father of American Education".
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act
    President Lyndon Johnson was responsible for congress passing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) in 1965. This was followed after the 1964 Civil Rights Act which was detriment to desegregating schools.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act (Public Law 94-142) was passed in 1975. It required a free and appropriate public education. It also created what children still have today called an Individualized Education Program which we now call an IEP. They were to have the least restrictive learning environment, related services, and due process procedures. This transformed into the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1990.

    Common Core Standards
    Common Core State Standards are standards that in 2009 was adapted by 48 states in the U.S. The idea is that states have common and consistent real world learning goals that ensure all students graduate high school and are prepared for college, career, and life.
