  • Civil Rights Act

    US Government declared no one could be denied an education based on race, religion, origin or sex. The US was beginning to recognize the right of all children to have an education and the benefit to society.
  • ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act)

    Enacted as part of the nation's "War on Poverty", ESEA poured more than 1 billion dollars into education, and identified low-income, underfunded schools as Title 1 schools. This allowed local districts to purchase textbooks, improve infrastructure, and train teachers.
  • IDEA

    Ensures all students regardless of disability have a Free Appropriate Public Education, tailored to their individual need. This included learning in the Least Restrictive Environment and the use of IEPs to better serve students.
  • NCLB (No Child Left Behind)

    Required state standards for reading and math in all grade levels. Required schools to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). All students must be taught be "highly qualified teachers". Yearly school "report cards" were made public.
  • ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act)

    Replaces NCLB, allows states to develop accountability systems. More flexibility is given to the states while holding to nationwide standards.States are given allowance to fix under-performing schools as they see fit.
