    The first school to teach females was opened in 1727 in New Orleans, Louisiana. This was a step for women to be seen as equal. It took a long time for everyone to adapt to this thinking, and Uruline was definitely a start.

    The first public highschool was opened in Boston, Massachusetts. Public schools began to rapidly increase the number of children in school. This allowed the human capital to increase with the growing number of educated citizens.
  • Horace Mann Enlightenment

    Horace Mann Enlightenment
    Horace Mann advocates for education for all. He also strikes enthusiasm for teachers and students. Horace Mann was one of the largest advocates for public school and was one of the staples for the United States Public Education System
  • Compulsory Laws

    Compulsory Laws
    Cumpolsory Laws are inacted, stating that all students under 14 years of age must attend school. 30 states adopted these laws, 4 being in the south. These laws helped African Americans obtain a high quality education.
  • Gary Plan

    Gary Plan
    A superintendent, William Wirt, started a plan to better utilize the facilities of the school, starting night classes. This allowed immigrants to take English classes during the evening while students took regular classes during the day. Many schools through out the U.S. adopted the Gary Plan.

    The National Education Association began to change their tactics. They started by better educating the teachers and administrators. They also increase moblity providing more opportunities for children to be educated.
