ECE History Timeline 101

  • First Children's Picture Book Created

    John Amos Comenius produced the first children's picture book "The World Illustrated". Children's picture books are essential to early childhood education because they reveal underlying messages and themes and each child is prompted to draw their own conclusions rather than being told "no biting" or "use your manners".
  • First Public School Kindergarden Opened

    First public school kindergarden was opened in St. Louis. Public School is essential to early childhood education because it allows children to become accustomed to different kinds of children. Nothing illustrates to a kindergardener how to stand up for themselves, share, and sit quietly quite like kindergarden does. Also, public school generally has more children which teaches an individual student to be patient and sharing.
  • Head Start Is Opened

    Head start was funded by the National Economic Opportunities Act. It is not-for-profit and works with any and all disadvantaged children in order to give them a fair chance at succeding in life no matter what their circumstance was at birth. Head Start is important because it is purely to assist in the growth and development of young children through early childhood education.
  • T.E.A.C.H Scholarship Enacted

    The T.E.A.CH. scholarship program was enacted which allows students to be encouraged to take classes because T.E.A.CH will reimburse them for the costs. The T.E.A.C.H program is phenomenal because many aspiring teachers cannot get time off of work to go to class or to do their online class. This program pays their daycare to give them alotted time for school work as well as make going back to school a realistic possibility. T.E.A.C.H encourages continuing your education.
  • The Child Care and Devleopment Block Grant

    The Child Care Development Block grant is the primary source of federsl US funding to assist with low-income families. The Child Care and Development Block grant is an excellent resource for families because children are expensive, and financial assistance is beyond helpful when parents have to go back to work and send their children to daycare. Many times, low-income families work very hard to make ends meet and the CCDB makes life the tinest bit less stressful.
  • The "No Child Left Behind Act" Is Passed

    Involves the governments aid for disadvantaged students. This act makes it requirement to asses students in basic skills. In the "No Child Left Behind Act" each state develops their own standards and assesments.
  • SIDS Campaign

    A campaign was launched to avoid SIDS in childcare settings. The SIDS campaign is detrimental to child care because sometimes SIDS prevention methods are not common sense and one simple change is enough to save a child's life. It is one of the most important things that every staff member in an infant or toddler room is well versed on SIDS because something as simple as a heavy blanket in a crib or putting a baby to bed on their tummy can cost a family their most important treasure.
  • Operation Military Child Care Begins

    Operation Military Child Care supports the child care needs of parents who are actively in the military and deployed. Operation Military Childcare encourages families to join the military even if they have children at home. The military care workers are required schooling and training just as regular daycare providers are which makes it easy to trust the providers and again, encourage military services.
