  • Period: Oct 16, 1483 to Oct 17, 1546

    Martin Luther

    Martin Luther translated the bible from Latin to a vernacular language allowing people to be educated in their own languages. He advocated for establishing schools to teach children how to learn. This was the first move in supporting teaching reading to all including adult literacy.

    Friedrich Frobel

    Frobel thought that children developed by "unfolding" and also compared them to growing plants. This guided him to develop the thought of the "Garden of Children" or Kindergarten. Our role as parents and teachers is similar to a gardener. We are helping them grow!

    Maria Montessori

    After becoming the first woman in Italy to earn a medical degree she turned her interests towards educational solutions for problems such as deafness, paralysis and metal retardation. She always believed that mental deficiency was more of an educational problem rather than a medical problem. By age 28 she was the director of a school for mentally disabled children. She believed in multi-aged grouping based on periods of development and created the Montessori early childhood program.

    Jean Piaget

    Piaget created the Theory of Development based on ages and stages. The goal was to match children's education with to their stages of cognitive development. Piaget stated that there were four stages of development. The first stage (birth-2 years) the sensori-motor stage, the preoperational stage (2-7 years,) the concrete operational stage (7-11 years,) and (11 and beyond) formal operation stage. Piaget's theory helped with things today such as constructivist approaches to early development.

    Erik Erikson

    Psychosocial Theory was developed by Erik Erikson. He was sure that cognitive and social development occur hand in hand, not separate. Although Erikson recognized the basic notions of the Freudian Theory he believes some of the important dimensions of human development were misjudged. While Frued believed that personality was shaped by age five Erikson was sure of the fact that humans constantly develop throughout their lifespan.

    Abraham Maslow

    Abraham Maslow created the Self Actualization Theory. Maslow created the Hierarchy of Human Needs. Most importantly life essentials followed by safety and security, belonging and love, achievement and prestige and lastly aesthetics.

    Education of All Handicapped Children Act (EAHC)

    The Education of All Handicapped Children Act was established in 1975. Soon after, Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) was put into place and in order to continue to receive federal funds had to be followed.

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    The Education of All Handicapped Children Act was reauthorized and renamed IDEA or Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.This act is still in affect today. This has helped with inclusion, UD or Universal Design which is making classroom environments and curriculum and curriculum accessible to all children. IDEA has also helped with RTI or Response to Instruction, DI or Differentiated Instruction. Although we are still fighting the battle of equality in the classroom today, IDEA is helping.
