The U.S. Marines stormed the beaches of the Island Iwo Jima. The marines made easy targets for the Japanese, who dug miles of tunnels and built multiple concrete bunkers throughout the island. The Marines, although at a disadvantage, took over Suribachi and raised the United States flag.
