One of the children spots a snake and yells out to his mother 'Snake! Mother, here's a snake!' The mother dashes from the kitchen to try and kill the snake but the snake escapes to under the house. As the snake goes under the house the Dog breaks from his chain in hopes of catching the snake but he's to slow. The storm is coming, so the mum rushes everyone inside the kitchen and feeds them supper. And makes up a bed on the kitchen table because they cant sleep inside.

We are introduced to the characters. The drovers wife and her 4 kids. Were given a description of the house, and the land around them. We are told that the drover husband is away with his sheep.

The Mum stays up all night to try and catch the snake and kill it. While the wife is awake she flashes back to all the hardships and tough things she's had to overcome without the support of her husband because he's been away.

The dog alligator senses the snake coming up from the cracks. The wife grabs a stick ready to kill the snake. As the snake makes its way out of the crack the dog catches the snake by the tail and as he's pulling out the snake the women uses her club to hit the snake. After the snake has been hit a couple of times she puts it on the fire to kill it. The drovers wife, her son and the dog all watch the snake burn away in the fire.

After the son watched his mother save them from the snake all by herself he says "Mother, I wont never go drovin"; Blast me if I do!'
The mum hugs her son and they watch the sun rise over the bush.
