    Birth of Dorothea Dix
    Dorothea Dix was born in Hampden, Maine in 1802. Her Father's name is Joseph Dix and her mother's name was Mary Bigelolow. Her father was an itinerant Methodist preacher that was freqently away from home, he was also a strict man prone to acholism and drepression. Her mother was an acholic also with frequent problems of depression. When she turned 12 she moved in with her wealthy grandmother.

But Dorothea suffered a poor health so he took a brake from teaching and began writeing devotional books and stories for kids. Then in 1831 she opened a model school for girls.

    In 1836 she closed her lastest school. She then traveled to England to find a cure for her sickness, She stayed with the Rathbone family. The Rathbone family were quakers and social reformers. Here she was introduced to reform movements. The members of this were investigating madhouse and asylums.

    Between !840 and 1841 Dix made up surveys of the poor treated people in need of care in Massachuetts. In most cases, towns had local individuals to care for mentally ill people who could not care for themselves. Dix published the results in a report to the state legislature. "I proceed, Gentlemen, briefly to call your attention to the present state of Insane Persons confined within this Commonwealth, in cages, stalls, pens! Chained, naked, beaten with rods, and lashed into obedience."

    After she went to the Massachuetts legistatrue the movement began to change mental hospitals. qafter her sucess in Massachuetts she began to travel to different states improving the mental hospitals everywhere.

She offen times had many aruments with army doctors about care of the patients and roles in a hospital. Also when confederate forces were at gettysburg many of Dix's women were there to help the 5,000 wounded soilders.

    Dorothea dix started in the civil war one week after it had started. She was appointed to go to hospitals and organize the nurses, care, and outfits. She had made every nurese dress plain and ugly with no hoop on the inside. She wanted to make sure the nurses didnt catch any attention. She helped the union side. She was the first women to be appointed such a high role. Dix's skills were very much needed in the civil war becasue she had talents. She was widely feared by the other nurses.
