Tris and Caleb and everyone else that is their age from all of the different factions go to the center of their city to their old school to take the aptitude test to see what faction they should join on choosing day.

She goes into the testing room and gets hooked up to the machines and get injected with the simulation serum. She goes under and has to pick out of 3 baskets to get something to help her with the next part of the simulation, she then fights a dog, and saves a little girl then wakes up.

She wakes up from the simulation and Tori tells her that she is divergent because she had an aptitude for 3 different factions, Erudite, Dauntless, and Abnegation. Tori tells her to be careful because being divergent is really dangerous, and she goes home early.

When Tris is walking home after the test she runs into a factionless man on the streets. She then realizes that she isn’t meant for Abnegation because her first thought isn’t about being selfless.

Caleb asks about her results and she says you tell me what one you got first, then he says tomorrow when you choose think about our family but also think about yourself.

She gets to the choosing ceremony and meets Jeanine Matthews head of the Erudite faction. Then Caleb chooses before her and he changes to Erudite. She then goes up and couldn’t decide between Abnegation and Dauntless. She cuts her hand to put her blood in the big bowls she almost puts it in Abnegation but at the last second she moves her hand and a drop of blood drips between the bowls onto the ground and then she drops a drop of her blood into the Dauntless bowl, the one she wanted to join.

She leaves with the Dauntless and looks over at her parents they are both crying because both of their children left Abnegation. She climbs up to the train platform where she has to jump onto the moving train with the rest of the dauntless. She then meets what her best friend Christina who is also a transfer from Candor.

Her and Christina jump off the train to a roof top of one of the Dauntless building. Someone else jumped off the train and missed the roof and splattered onto the ground. They then go to the center of the roof and meet one of their Dauntless leaders Max. He tells them that they have to jump into a hole in the roof. No one volunteers because they don’t know what’s at the bottom and they are all scared to jump first. Tris then volunteers to jump first and at the bottom she hits a net.

Tris hits the net and someone pulls her off of it and she meets Four who will be her initiation instructor. He then asks her name so he can call it out to the rest of the Dauntless as being the first jumper. She doesn’t say it at first so he says she can choose and new one if it’s hard but she only gets to choose it once so choose good. Then she starts to go by Tris instead of Beatrice.

Tris sits with Christina, Al, and Will at her first dinner at the compound. They couldn’t find somewhere to sit so they go and sit by Four their instructor. Tris has a hamburger for the first time and all of her friends are weirded out that she has never had one before. Four explains that Abnegation only eats really plain food. She meets Eric, one of the Dauntless leaders, for the first time.

After dinner Tris, Christina, Will, and Al go and get tattoos to celebrate surviving their first day at Dauntless. Tris gets 3 birds on her collar bone that symbolizes her 3 family members she left behind. She also tries to talk to Tori about her test but Tori doesn’t talk because it’s not the right time or place to do so.

She goes to training for the first time they learn how to fight each other in hand to hand combat, and they learn how to shoot and hold guns. Christina fights Molly and gives up so Eric makes her hang over the chasm by her fingertips for 5 minutes and if she can’t do it she is out of Dauntless for good. Christina makes it and they go to bed.

Tris fights Peter another transfer initiate. Peter wins and puts Tris in the hospital for a day. Christina, Will, and Al come and visit her right before they leave to go play capture the flag.

Tris goes even though she’s not supposed to. She gets put on Four’s team with Christina and some other initiates that are a mix of Dauntless born ones and transfers like her. They come up with a plan and while they do that Tris and Four climb the Ferris Wheel to see if they could see the other teams flag. She finds out the Four is scared of heights but they found the other teams flag. They go back down and come up with a new plan on how to get the other teams flag. Fours team wins the game.

They go the next day to training and they learn how to throw knives. Al is terrible at it and he keeps missing so Eric tells him to go get the knives he’s thrown while everyone else is still throwing. He says no and gets in trouble from Eric and is told to stand in front of the target while Four throws knives at him. Eric tells him if he flinches he’s out of Dauntless.

Tris says thats stupid and doesn’t prove anything to anyone. Eric tells her to take Als place but the same thing applies. Four throws a couple of knives and she’s good but then Eric says he can get closer than that and he throws one and it cuts her ear. She gets mad at Four for cutting her.

Tris wasn’t expecting anyone to come but her mom came. Four comes up to them and says that Tris is doing very good in initiation. She then meets her friends parents and Al is no where to be seen. Tris’s mom tells her that Erudite is planning something and it isn’t good.

Her mom asks her to ask Caleb if he will research the simulation serum. Then her mom leaves and Tris goes back to the dormitory and finds Al. He doesn’t want to see his parents because that will make everything harder for him. Al confesses his feeling for Tris, she doesn’t feel the same way towards him and things get kind of awkward between them.

They find out their rankings and Tris barely makes it through to the next section of training. Edward is first and Peter is second, Peter doesn’t like that at all. That night Peter stabs Edward in the eye with a butter knife to try and get rid of him. Tris goes and cleans up all of his blood and helps him until someone gets there to help them. He leaves Dauntless and Myra the girl that likes him leaves Dauntless also. Them leaving saves Al from getting kicked out of Dauntless.

To celebrate making it through the first part of training the Dauntless born initiates go zip lining off of the hundredth floor of the Hancock building. Uriah invites Tris to go along with them to celebrate and get her mind off of what happened the previous night with Edward. She meets a bunch of Dauntless including Uriah’s brother Zeke. She goes down head first so she can feel like she’s flying. At the end she almost doesn’t pull the break in time and almost splats onto the side of a building.

All of the initiates Dauntless born and transfers begin stage two together which are fear simulations. Tris goes through it with a really fast time, the last one of her fear simulations she broke the glass of a tank she was trapped in. She wakes up from the simulation and Four asks her how she does it she says she just tapped it and the glass broke.

Four erases the data from the simulation and walks her back to the dormitory through a back hallway. He asks if she’s divergent and that she needs to be careful because people kill them. Four also talks about how Eric is jealous of him.

Al, Will, Christina, and Tris are all walking to go do something since it was the first day of the second stage. Four stops Tris when he is drunk by chasm to tell her good job with how she did that day in training. He says he probably shouldn’t be talking to her drunk but he’s doing it anyway. She goes back to her friends and they ask what that was and she says it was nothing.

That night she went to talk to Tori after Four had talked to her. Tori tells her how dangerous it is to be Divergent in Dauntless. Tori tells Tris the story her brother Georgie who was Divergent also. She had said how he had gotten really good really fast like Tris then she says how if a Dauntless leader finds out that she is Divergent she will most likely die.

She had said that when that happened to her brother they killed him but they had said the Georgie had commited suicide but her brother wasn’t suicidal so that wasn’t what had happened.

Tris goes to the place in the compound with the net that she jumped onto from the top of the building on her first day at Dauntless. She went there to remind herself of why she even chose Dauntless in the first place. She then had to go through more simulations like always.

Tris goes back to the dormitory to find ranking again and she is at the very top. Peter gets super mad at this and he tries to convince her friends that she is just manipulating them.

After all of Tris’s friends kind of shut her out from having such good times with the simulations she goes on a walk alone. She then runs into Uriah, Marlene, and Lynn. They invite her to come with them to watch Uriah shoot a muffin off Marlene's head to try and cheer her up.

Tris goes back to the dormitory and pretends to be asleep when every one else starts to come in. She then gets out of bed to get a drink when every one is asleep. She finds Max and Jeanine talking about divergents. Tris then gets abducted by Peter, Al and Drew. They take her and try to throw her over the edge of the chasm but Four comes and stops them before they can.

Tris wakes up in Fours apartment with a headache. She finds out that Drew is in the infirmary now from what Four did to him. Four explains kind of why they tried to kill her.

After a while Al asks Tris if she would forgive him and he gives a big speel about how sorry he is. Tris says if he ever comes near her again she would kill him and called him a coward. That night Al commits suicide by jumping over the chasm.

Tris finds out and freaks because she feels like it’s her fault. But the dauntless honor him by calling him brave and courageous because he was brave enough to venture into the darkness without knowing what lies beyond it. She gets mad because they are calling him brave but he wasn’t. She said that the courageous thing would have been to admit his weakness and leave Dauntless, pride was what killed Al.

Christina, Will, and Tris all go and get tattoos again. Tris get the abnegation symbol on her right shoulder because it was a part of who she was and it was very important to her.

Tris follows Four into the fear simulation room. He tells her to come into his with him. She finds out that he is afraid of only four things and thats how he got his nickname. He is afraid of heights, confinement, murdering innocent people, and his abusive father who is Marcus Eaton. She also finds out that his real name is Tobias Eaton he just doesn’t go by that because it is traumatizing for him.

Tris after going through Laurens fear landscape she leaves the Dauntless compound to visit Caleb at Erudite headquarters. She finds him he’s worried that she is there and says she shouldn’t be. Then she gets pissed off at him because he says and follows the saying of their city of faction before blood. She goes back to the compound and gets in trouble with Eric but then Four gets her out of it.

Tris goes through her own fear landscape and she is afraid of crows, loss of control, abduction, intimacy, drowning, death of her family, being burned alive. She does really good but not too good that the Dauntless leaders find out that she’s divergent.

After all the initiates are done going through their fear landscapes they get injected with a serum that Jeanine made to control the dauntless and make them mindless soldiers. Then Jeanine starts controlling them to do what she wants which is killing the entire abnegation sector of the city so that she can be incontrol of the government.

Tris and Four get on the train with their guns just like everyone else copying their every move to make it seem like they aren’t divergent. They get off and try to find her parents, her friends start killing innocent abnegation people, Max and Eric find out they are divergents and Tris shoots Eric because he has said that she wouldn’t.

Tris’s mom finds her after Jeanine finds them and takes Four. Tris and her mom run to where her dad and some of the other abnegation people are hiding at. They are shooting at people to defend themselves trying not to get killed. Will was under the simulation just like the rest of the Dauntless he was pointing his gun at Tris and she tried to snap him out of it but it wasn’t working and he almost shot her but she shot him first and she killed him.

Tris and her mom ran and he mom tried to comfort her and help her a little bit through of what she just did. It kind of helps but then her mom gets shot and killed trying to defend them. Right before she dies she tells Tris to be brave and to keep going and to finish what they started.

Tris gets to the safe house that some of the abnegation are at. She sees her brother and her dad there. She has to tell them that her mother had got shot and killed. Someone helps her to get the bullet out of her shoulder because she had gotten shot too. They stitch up the wound in her shoulder after the bullet is out. Tris, Caleb, Marcus, and her dad go to the dauntless compound to try and shut down the simulation that Jeanine is running.

Tris, Caleb, Marcus, and her father get onto the trains to go to the dauntless compound so that the dauntless all become mindless murderers. They get to the compound and they see Peter. Tris threatens him and shoots him in the leg. He tells them where they are controlling the simulation from.

Marcus gets mad that Tris shot Peter because he thought that it wasn’t really necessary. Tris, Caleb and her father go up to the simulation room and her father shoots a bunch of dauntless acting as guards over the room. He kills a bunch of them but one of them shoots him and kills him. Then Tris shoots the guard that shot her father.

Inside the simulation room Tris finds Tobias under a simulation controlling what happens in the attack simulation that all of the mindless dauntless are under. Tris tries to snap him out of it but the simulation that he is under makes all of his friends look like his enemies and all of his enemies look like his friends.

Tobias attacks her and tries to kill her but then she fights him and he almost wins, Tris has a gun she was almost going to shoot him. Tris realizes right before she shoots him that she couldn’t do that because she loves him. She then put the barrel against her own head and he takes the gun and is going to shoot her but he can’t shoot an innocent person even under a simulation but Tris talks him out of it and it makes him snap out of the simulation. Then Tobias shuts the whole simulation down.

After Tobias and Tris shut down the simulation they are wanted criminals according to Jeanine. So they had to leave the city for refuge in the Amity section of the city outside of the wall surrounding the city.
