Exposition- the Choosing of Factions
This story takes place in a futuristic society in Chicago, where people belong to factions. These factions are chosen based upon your values in life, such as Candor- truth. The exposition is when Beatrice, the main character, takes the test to choose which faction she belongs to. Her results come up inconclusive, showing that she is Divergent. Instead of choosing her current faction- Abnegation, which believed in selflessness- she chose Dauntless, which believed in courage. -
Rising Action- Initiation Begins
The Dauntless initiation, which shows whether you can become a member of the Dauntless faction, is a series of tests of physical strength and smarts, as well as the test of bravery. The first tests consisted of jumping off a moving train onto a building, then jumping off that building. Beatrice, now known as Tris, was the first to jump off the building, -
Rising Action- The first stage of the initiation
The Initiation then had a series of fighting matches, in which you fought people every day. In the first match, Beatrice fought the most powerful Initiate- Peter. She lost easily to him, getting a concussion and several serious bruises. But one of the Initiate moderators- Four- helped her, and Four became her friend, even though he was completely full of mysteries. In the second match, she easily defeated Myra. Her last fight was against Molly, in which she won and ranked 7th in the first stage. -
Rising Action- Second stage of the Initiation
The second stage of the initiation was how long it would take you to face one of your worst fears through a simulation. When Tris went into her simulation, she found herself in a field while crows from all directions attacked her, and she was helpless, and dying, but she conquered that fear by calming down and realizing that it was just a simulation. When she woke, she woke in under two-and-a- half minutes, which earned her first place in the second stage of the initiation. -
Rising Action- Final Stage of the Initiation.
Tris became Four's friend, and let her go through his fear landscape, which was the final stage of the initiation. Four's fears consist of heights, confined spaces, his father, and killing his mother.Only four fears is almost impossible to have,, which is why he was given the nickname Four.The next day, Tris went through her own landscape on her own. She only had six fears, which was almost as amazing. This got her ranked 1st overall in the final stage of the initiation. -
Climax- The Serum takes Effect
The Erudite, who made the simulation serum, put special devices inside the serum so that everyone who takes the serum turns under their control. The only people who aren't effected are the Divergents, who include Tris and Four, as well as others. Those people were not controlled, but the leader of the Erudite- Jeanine- finds the Divergents and uses them to develop a new serum.They use it on Four and he starts obeying their commands. -
Falling Action- Four is Saved!
As Tris escaped from Jeanine, she went to the Dauntless compound to rescue Four. When she reached Four, he was being controlled by the Erudite using the simulation serum. He told her to drop her gun, and she did. Then, she picked it up and pressed it into Four's hand. Then, Four put it at her head. This woke him up from the simulation, and they ran out of the compound together, going to the only place they thought could be safe- Amity. -
Falling Action- Death of Mother
As Tris escaped from the compound, her mother was there waiting for her, knowing this would happen. She and Tris ran to the Abnegation compound, and ran into many soldiers of the Dauntless who shot at them. Luckily, Tris's mother brought guns, and they retaliated. They were able to evade the Dauntless soldiers for a while, until they were completely surrounded. Tris's mother sacrificed herself and she died, leaving Tris with no family. -
Resolution- Factionless
At the end of the book, Tris and Four, along with Caleb- Tris's brother, are boarding a train to Amity- a faction that believes in peace. The book ends with a cliff hanger in which Tris says " I am no longer Tris the selfless, nor Tris the brave. I suppose now, I must become more than either." This means that she realises that she has turned into the factionless, and she no longer has a home. -
Direct Characterization 1
One example of direct characterization is when Tris explains her appearance- "I see a narrow face, wide, round eyes, and a long thin nose-- I still look like a little girl." -
Direct Characterization 2
Another example of Direct Characterization is when Tris is being attacked by crows. When she is in this situation, she says " I am so scared, 'someone, help me!' I sobbed and screamed. I am dying, I am dying." This shows the Tris is extremely scared and needs help. -
Indirect Characterization 1
One example of indirect characterization is when Tris lets Four throw knifes at her so Al, another initiate, doesn't have to have knives thrown at him. The quote from this scene is "It doesn't prove anything except for the fact that your bullying us, which is a sign of cowardice. I walked in front of the board and stood there, waiting for the knife to come." This proves that Tris is brave, and is selfless. She is not afraid to sacrifice herself for someone else. -
Indirect Characterization 2
Another example of Indirect Characterization is when Tris is about to sacrifice herself when she cannot kill Four. She hands Four her gun, and he holds it up to her head. A quote from that scene is "I turn the gun in my hands and press it into Four's palm. He pushes the barrel into my forehead. The bullet clicks into the chamber. Can I be forgiven for everything I've done?" This scene shows Tris's selflessness, and that she still is brave. She shows the qualities of the Dauntless and Abnegation.
