Development of Cell Theory

  • Hans and Zacharias Janssen

created the first compound microscope using two convex lenses within a tube
  • Robert Hooke

    Robert Hooke
Observed the first cells, in a slice of cork using a microscope. Seeing the box like structure he coined the term cell.
  • Francesco Redi

Italian physician, did an experiment to find if rotting meat turned into flies.(Spontaneous generation). He found that only flies could make more flies. This helped to disprove the theory of spontaneous generation.
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek

Dutch biologist, sees the first living cells in pond water. Using a microscope and lenses he made.
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek

Wrote a letter to the Royal Society containing drawings of protozoa and bacteria which he discovered using a microscope.
  • John Needham

1745-48 scottish clergyman and natralist. experimented by exposing soup to the air believeing the micro-organisms that grew on the soup were caused by a life force in the air. Spontaneous generation.
  • Lazzaro Spallanzani

From the years of 1765 to 1767, Italian abbot and biologist, tried various experiments like John Needham’s soup experiments. He found that soup in a sealed container was sterile and that micro organisms that caused the soup to go-off had entered via the air.
  • Robert Brown

English Botanist discovered the nucleus in plant cells.
  • Matthias Jakob Schleiden

German Botanist made the first generalized statment about cells, which was that "all plant tissues are composed of cells, and that cells are the basic building blocks of all plants."
  • Theodor Schwann

German Botanist came to the conclusion that both plants and animal tissue were composed of cells. This stopped discussion over whether plants and animals were different on the microscopic level. With this new information the cell theory statment was revised, "1 - Cells are organisms and all organisms consist of one or more cells 2 - The cell is the basic unit of structure for all organisms".
  • Albrecht von Roelliker

Discovered that sperm and eggs are also cells
  • Carl Heinrich Braun

re-wrote the cell theory statment so that it re-definies cells as the basic unit of life.
  • Rudolf Virchow,

German physiologist, physician, pathologist revised the cell theory statement, adding the third poart. "3. Cells develop only from existing cells". he was the first person to propose unhealthy cells came from healthy cells (cancer).
  • Louis Pasteur

Conducted an experiment using broth to determine is micro-organisims would form on the broth is exposed to air. If he used s shaped necked containers the organisms would form in the neck and not on the broth.
