Lena freaks out and runs home telling herself she can't see Alex again, but she is already infected and doesn't know it.

Lena then has her evaluation and it was much easier for her this time, and gets paired to Brian Scharff whos favorite hobbies are fantasy football and watching the news, which Lena isn't too excited about.

Hana invites Lena to an illegal party in an abandoned area of town. That night turns out to be a surprise raid night, and Lena sneaks out of the house to go warn Hana and the others at the party of the raid. When she gets there the raid party breaks in and people are being killed by the raiders and their dogs, and as Lena tries to escape she is bitten by one of the dogs. Luckily Lena makes it out and escapes with Alex. -
Lena is head over heels for Alex and definitely infected with amor deliria nervosa, but she doesn't care, she doesn't worry about Hana much because she was thinking about Alex, and she shares her feelings with Hana about him.

Hana, Lena, and Alex break into 37 Brooks and spend most of their time that summer there. Alex asks Lena if she wants to come to the wilds with him and she agrees, Lena and Alex make it over the presumably electrified fence without a hitch and make it back to Portland safely after a night of poetry under the stars. -

Lena is not liking Brian and Alex comes around and sees them in her backyard. She meets Alex at midnight and talks about running away to the wilds forever, and they agree, but Alex tells her that he thinks her mother is alive.

They barely make it into ward six, where she was, and they see her cell, where the word love is written on every square inch of it. She is not there, she escaped, but left her dagger necklace behind. Lena also goes with Alex to see his father's grave.

They are being chased by lots of authourities and are caught by the fence. Alex surrenders and tells Lena to go to the wilds without him and he will get there later but he is killed by the officers before Lena is fully out of sight.
