David Crockett was born on August 17, 1786 in Limestone, Tennessee. He was the fifth of nine children. -

Enlisting in the militia
In 1813, following a massacre by Creek warriors of the occupants of Fort Mims in southwest Alabama, Crockett enlisted in the Tennessee militia. He participated in a massacre of Indians at Tallussahatchee in northern Alabama, but returned home when his enlistment was up. -
Missing the Battle of Horseshoe Bend
He was not present at the decisive Battle of Horseshoe Bend (March 27, 1814) when the Creeks were defeated. -
Second Enlistment
During his second enlistment, begun September 18, 1814, he joined Andrew Jackson’s forces at Pensacola; but, discharged again, he returned home, missing the Battle of New Orleans. -

Lieutenant Colonel
On March 27, 1818, he was elected lieutenant colonel of the Fifty-seventh Regiment of Tennessee Militia, defeating candidate Daniel Matthews for the position. -
Rise and Downfall of Business
By 1819, Crockett was operating multiple businesses in the area and felt his public responsibilities were beginning to consume so much of his time and energy that he had little left for either family or business. He resigned from the office of justice of the peace and from his position with the regiment. -
Davy Crockett was seated in Congress
Davy Crockett resigned as a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives on New Year's Day 1821. In 1826, he earned a seat in the 21st U.S. Congress. He was re-elected to Congress twice before leaving politics to fight in the Texas Revolution. He also ran for other seats in Congress before leaving for to fight in the Alamo. -

Death
David Crockett was killed in Alamo Mission San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas during the Battle of the Alamo. His last words were "Do not be uneasy about me. I am among friends. I will close with great respects. Your affectionate father. Farewell” . While the exact cause of Crockett's death is unknown, the memoirs of a Mexican officer named José Enrique de la Peña stated that Crockett and his comrades at arms died "without complaining and without humiliating themselves before their torturers."
