Coming to New York

  • Immigrants

    Immigrants
    During the 1800s, immigrants from Germany, Ireland, France, and England made their way to America. New York is the placed that they longed to be. It offered better job opportunities and freedom to live the way they wanted to. Most of the immigrants were Irish and struggled to live once they arrived in New York.
  • Germans

    Germans
    As the Irish immigrants did, the German immigrants began to make their way to America. Once they arrived, the Germans worked along with the Irish in factories and construction sites in New York. Some Germans were well educated and have a lot of money. They were either Jewish, Catholic, or Protestant. Because of their educations, Germans pushed for trade unions.

    During the late 1800s and early 1900s, a large group of Italian immigrants made their way to the land of the free.They had to move from their land becuase it was overpopulated and over farmed. They also wanted to escape the violence of their contry. Therefore, the traveled to New York to live a better life.
  • The Statue of Liberty

    The Statue of Liberty
    The Statue of Liberty was shipped from fance piece by piece. The pieces were scattered all over new York. For example, the hand holding the Tourch was in madison Square. Some people even wanted to leave the statue the way it was instead of putting it together and raising it.

    By the mid-1900s, New york was very populated. People of different cultures filled the city streets. By this time, there were roughly two million immigrants that traveled to new York.

    During this time, an abundance of African Americans came from the South to New York. The city was booming with population and different cultures. In east Manhattan, the United Nation headquarters was bulit making New York the world's capitial.
  • Ellis Island

    Ellis Island
    Ellis Island was home for millions of immigrants. It was a very important immgration staion. Around 1898 all of the buildings on the island were burned down. However, in 1900 a wall was built of brick and stone to with stand fire and could hold about half a million immigrants. Unfortunately, in 1954 Ellis Island was closed.
  • New Immigration Law

    New Immigration Law
    The Hart Cellualr Act was passed in 1965. It was an immigration law that allowed immgrants with talents to come to America. After this law was passed, roughly two miilion immigrants came to New York City.
