Berlin Blockade
Soviet Union blocked off the western allied sectors. The point of the western sector being blocked off was to give Soviets full control of Berlin. -

North Atlantic Treaty Organziation formed to be a defensive millitary for the U.S. incase of an attack from the Soviet Union, The treaty was signed on April 4th 1949, commencement began in July. -

First Soviet atomic test, code named First lightning or Joe 1 by the U.S. Bomb was very similar to fat man, It also used plutonium. -

The KGB was a Soviet secret police which lasted from 1954-1991. The KGB was used for intelligence, internal security and secret police. -
Warsaw Pact established
The warsaw pact was established in May of 1955. It was a defense treaty used between eight communist states in the eastern part of Europe. -
U.S.S.R launches Sputnik into orbit
Sputnik was the first satelite to be put into earths orbit. It was launched by the Soviet Union on October 4th 1957. -
Fidel Castro takes over Cuba
On Febuary 16th Fidel Castro ofically took over Cuba. Castro formed an alliance with the Soviets which lead to the Cuban Missile Crisis. -

In 1960 John F. Kennedy (JFK) was elected president of the United States. -
Berlin wall construction begins
In August of 1961 the Berlin wall had started its construction. It was made to cut off west Berlin from surrounding East Germany and East Berlin. -

In July of 1969 the U.S. sent the first man to the moon in the Apollo 11 mission. The mission was lead by Neil Armstrong which was the man who stepped on the moon. -
SALT 1 nuclear treaty signed
The SALT nuclear treaty is a treaty that was signed by Gerald Ford and Leonid Breznev. The meaning of this treaty was for the reduction or nuclear arms and forces. -
President Richard Nixon resigns
In August of 1974 U.S. President Richard Nixon resigned. He resigned from presidency due to the lack of political support and impeachment. -
Ronald Raegan reveals Straegic Defense Initiative "Star Wars"
The Strategic Defense Initiative was space system used to protect the U.S. from attacks by nuclear ballistic missiles. The system mostly focused on the strategic defense rather than offense. -
Raegan and Gorbachev resolve to remove all intermediate nuclear missiles from Europe (INF Treaty)
This treaty involved the Soviets and the U.S. The treaty was based to get rid of intermidiate nuclear forces. The treaty was signed by Ronald Raegan and Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987. -
Berlin wall falls
In November of 1989 the fall of the Berlin wall begun. Protests became very violent and after a long discussion it was decided that the Berlin Wall would be taken down. -
Boris Yeltsin elected to presidency of Russia
In May of 1990 Boris Yeltsin was elected President of Russia. Yeltsin would finish the disolvement of the Soviet Union. Yeltsin was also a very strong supporter of Mikhail Gorbachev for the work that he did to end the Soviet Union. -
Warsaw Pact ends
on February 25th 1991 the Warsaw Pact was declared disbanded at a defense meeting. Months later Czechoslovak president Vaclav Havel ended the Warsaw Pact. -
U.S.S.R. Dissolved-- Cold War ends
In August of 1991 the Soviet Union was ofically dissolved. A few months back a treaty was signed by Russian president Boris Yeltsin as well as the Belarussian president and the Ukrainian president declaring the dissolvement of the Soviet Union. After the treaty former countries started to declare themselves independent countries and August was the official end to the Soviet Union and the Cold War.
