The submarine was drew by Leonardo da Vinci in 1620. Later that year Cornelis Drebbel acually built the model. It was a leather covered rowboat with oars. The oars came out through watertight seals. Twelve people could ride in the submarine.

H.L. Hundley created a better submarine in 1864, which was used in the Civil war. It was designed to be hand powered by a crew of nine: eight to turn the hand-cranked propeller and one to steer and direct the boat.
