Clara Harlowe Barton is born on December 25,1821. She is born in the town of North Oxford, Massachusetts . Clara was the daughter of Captain Stephen and Sarah Barton. She was the youngest of five children.

Clara opens a school in New Jersey because there are no free public schools. It is in the town of Bordentown.

The people of Bordentown, New Jersey are so happy with her school that they pay $4,000 for a new building. She is shocked to learn that she wouldn't be the principal of the school that she founded. Instead a man that would be paided double her pay would be.
