    In 1839 Clara took care of her brothers. They started becoming severly ill making her a caretaker. She then found out that she loves being a nurse. She ends up after this trying to make a living in the medical field.

    She worked as a recording clerk before becoming a nurse. It was at the U.S. Patent Office in Washington D.C. The first units of federal troops poured into the city. She got fired when the Democrats took office in 1856

    She helped with the wounded men on the battlefield. There were only some nurses on the battlefield because it was dangerous. She helped raise the U.S. flag over Adersonville grounds. She helped raise it for all of the dedication.

    She went to Europe to rest for a while. After seeing so much in battle she wanted to not worry about that for a while. She found a field or service in Red Cross in Geneva, Switzerland.

    She volunteered to help at the Franco-Prussian War. She worked on the battlefield to help wounded soldiers. She tried to call an international agreement for help. A treaty was signed after that.

    She tried to get the ratification of a treaty for aid. It would help countries and soldiers that are fighting. The countries that are in war needed help. She fought long and hard for that ratification of this treaty until it came through.

    She had gone through so much war that it was taking a toll on her. She grew ill from being there. She was retired ffrom the war zones because of exposure.

    She loved working for the Red Cross in Germany that she founded one in the United States. She became the President of the Red Cross. She is still known for founding it. She wanted to unite the other Red Crosses together.

    Clara and 50 volunteers went to Jonstown, Pennyslvania after a huge dam breakout. They helped get some people out of there. But there were 2,000 deaths. They only could save some of them.
  • Death

    She went back to her home because she was gettimg older. Not long after, she died at her home in Glen Echo, Mayland. She died at the age of 90 after accomplishing so much in her life. She was buried in the Barton Family Cemetary in Oxford, Massachussets.
