Clara and her 4 friends traveled all night in darkness to the battlefields to help the wounded soldiers. She was greeted with a scene of horror. Many soldiers lay on the ground covered in blood. Some were already dead.She took great care of all these soldiers by feeding and bandaging them. The soldiers named her the "Angel of the Battlefield".

After the Civil War ended Clara volunteered at the Red Cross in Switzerland and helped victims of the war. She then decided to start a Red Cross in the United States.
