    South Carolina votes to secede from the United States
    South Carolina succeeded from the union fearing that the South was being taken over by the North and the slavery would get revoked. When Lincoln was elected president the South knew that slavery was going to try to be taken away in all states. This is a major event that leads to the war.
  • Lincoln’s First Inaugural Address

    Lincoln’s First Inaugural Address
    Lincoln's inaugural address was to welcome him into the presidential spot. Since being elected 7 states had succeeded the union, but lincoln made it clear that he will still enforce federal laws on those who have. He also stated that he will not interfere where slavery had existed.

    After the Confederates won the battle at Fort Sumter they settled there for years using it as a fortification. The Confederates survived many attacks from the Union.

    This gave the military power to be able to control people who did not like what they were doing and tried to hurt them. This gave the military the chance to protect themselves from rebellious people.

    Virginia was very important to the Confederacy so they moved the capital from Alabama to Richmond. With that, they moved to the second biggest city in the South.

    The first battle of the civil war was fought in Virginia. There were 35,000 fighting for the Union and only 20,000 that were fighting for the Confederate. More and more Confederate troops kept on pounding the Union in and defeated them.

    Jefferson Davis was elected as the president of the Confederacy in which the capital was located in Richmond, Virginia. He was elected to serve 6 years as president. He served in many previous wars and he was senator of Mississippi right before being elected as President.

    This was the first naval war. It was the beginning of the ironclad warship battles. Their cannons were rotating and were very new and creative to this type of battle.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    The Confederates has attacked the Union while they did not realize it. It did not work for them though because they couldn't hold the Union and they fought back and had won the battle.
  • Robert E. Lee is named commander of the Army of Northern Virginia

    Robert E. Lee is named commander of the Army of Northern Virginia
    After defending Richmond in the civil war the Robert E. Lee got the role of the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. He did not have a lot of wins early on in the war so this was a big step for Lee.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Abe Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was put in place at this point. As the night on the battle came 23,000 ended up being dead and the battle lasted all night. The confederate scurried back to Virginia and the Union just let them leave. With that, the Union had technically won the battle.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg

    The battle of Fredericksburg was a bad loss for the Union and a great morale win for the Confederate. It was one of the largest battles and the Union crumbled apart with bad leadership through the commander position.
  • Emancipation Proclamation is announced

    As the country entered its third year of the Civil war Abe Lincoln announced his Emancipation Proclamation. It mainly stated that America was a slave-free country.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    There were 30,000 deaths in this battle. The Confederate had one led by Robert E. Lee. They didn't have nearly as many people as the Union but that did not matter.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    This war goes down as the turning point of the war. The Union had won. This ended the run for the Confederacy and there was a total of about 51,000 casualties.
  • Confederates surrender at Vicksburg

    The Confederate commanders were split in the way that they didn't know what type of strategy on how to approach Vicksburg. Ulysses S. Grant kept trying to take over Vicksburg but ended up failing multiple times and the confederate lost.
  • New York City draft riots

    These were riots in Manhattan that were the worst in history. That is because the draft for the war was going on and many people rebelled against it. African Americans were the ones often being killed during this.
  • Lincoln gives his Gettysburg Address

    This was a very famous address where Lincoln spoke about the Civil war and the DOI (Declaration of independence) connecting them to each other. He also talked about the freedom of the country and slavery being abolished. he famously started off the address with, "Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth"

    The union burned the whole city going after the Confederate, taking away their supplies. The union was ruthless in this battle killing many civilians.

    Abraham Lincoln defeats George McClellan to win re-election
    The battle of 1864 between Lincoln and McClellan was only voted on by the states that had not left the Union left. Lincoln won and he was very favored in the North and most of the votes came from the North because lots of the Southern states had already succeeded.
  • Sherman begins his March to the Sea

    Sherman went 6 weeks destroying the state of Georiga. They captured many major cities during that time in Georiga. After he knew that Lincoln was re-elected he ordered light wagons with supplies and started his trek burning the state.

    Slavery was abolished! After the Union had won the war this country was declared a slave-free country. Slavery was one of the main reasons why there was a civil war in America.
  • Freedmen's Bureau is created

    Freedmen's Bureau is created
    This provided supplies for southerners that suffered from the war. This started the end of the war and lasted a year long. It also helped African Americans that had been recently freed.

    Lincoln took office and stated his second inauguration. Sadly he only lived for 41 days after. He was killed by John Wilkes Booth. he stated that he planned to renew America as one.
  • Richmond falls to the Union Army

    Richmond falls to the Union Army
    After the Confederacy switches their capital from Mobile, Alabama to Richmond, Virginia, the union prevails and the Union took over Richmond. It was the main supply of weapons and resources and it was a huge win for the Union! The confederate retreated from Richmond and there it went. Richmond was done for the Confederacy.

    Robert E. Lee surrenders at Appomattox
    Robert E Lee. surrendered his troops in order to end the war. Lee and Grant were the best of the best in the Civil War and this time Grant came out on top. Lee's confederacy ended the civil war and started the new world with this new country of America.
  • President Lincoln assassinated

    President Lincoln assassinated
    Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Ford's Theater. There was a discrepancy over Lincoln not supporting slavery and the murderer, John Wilkes Booth (confederate sympathizer), decided he is going to take care of that and made sure Lincoln wasn't able to destroy slavery in the South. He was shot in the back of the head and later died.
  • John Wilkes Booth is killed

    John Wilkes Booth is killed
    After he killed Abe Lincoln in Ford's Theatre he was on the loose running for his life. Booth was a part of the Confederacy. He was running and made it to a barn far away but got tracked down and was shot in the barn as it was lit on fire.
