  • Virginia Secedes

  • Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation was a presidential proclamation issued by Abraham Lincoln. The proclamation states “that all persons held as slaves” within a certain area “are, and henceforward shall be free.”
  • Vicksburg

    In the summer of 1863, Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s Army of the Tennessee converged on Vicksburg on the Mississippi River, investing the city and trapping a Confederate army under Lt. Gen. John Pemberton.On May 25th, Grant decided to besiege the city. With no reinforcements coming, food and supplies nearly gone, and after holding out for more than forty days, Pemberton finally surrendered on July 4th.

  • Appomattox

    Harried mercilessly by Federal troops and continually cut off from turning south to reach Gen. Joseph Johnston's army in North Carolina, General Robert E. Lee headed west along the Appomattox River, eventually arriving in Appomattox County on April 8th. His objective was the South Side Railroad at Appomattox Station where food supplies awaited. Union cavalry under Brig. Gen. George A. Custer reached them first, capturing then burning three supply trains.
