November 1864-Abraham Lincoln is Re-elected
On November 8, Lincoln won by over 400,000 popular votes and easily secured an electoral majority. Seven states allowed their citizens serving as soldiers in the field to cast ballots, a first in United States history. His re election secured union victory. -
January 1865-The thirteenth amendment
The thirteenth amendment was added to permanently free all slaves. It was added after the civil war so it could be voted in. It states that no man should ever be owned by another. -
Fall of the Confederacy 1865
The confederacy began to break apart and return to the union after the fall of Richmond. Ulysses S. Grant took Richmond for the union. Richmond was the confederate capital where its congress held session. -
February-1865 Sherman Marches through North and South Carolina
Sherman marched through Georgia to annihilate any chance of confederate resistance after the war. Until Sherman was in place the threat of a second civil war was imminent. It also reminded the southern states that they were reinstated into the union. -
February 1865-a chance for Reconciliation is Lost
Confederate President Jefferson Davis agreed to send delegates to a peace conference with President Lincoln and Secretary of State William Seward, but insisted on Lincoln's recognition of the South's independence as a prerequisite. Lincoln refused, and the conference never occurred. -

April 1865- Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
Robert E lee’s final stand occurred here. He thought that the unions forces were all Calvary but what caught in its backing infantry. He had no choice but to surrender. -
April 1865- the Assassination of President Lincoln
John Wilkes booth shot Abraham Lincoln while he was in his balcony seat at a theater. The shot was directly to the back of the head and from nearly point blank range. Wilkes was caught. -
May 10, 1865- Jefferson Davis
On February 9, 1861, after Davis resigned from the United States Senate, he was selected to be the provisional President of the Confederate States of America; he was elected without opposition to a six-year term that November. During his presidency, Davis took charge of the Confederate war plans but was unable to find a strategy to stop the larger, more powerful and better organized Union. -
Consequences of the war 1866
The war forever split the north and the south. Approximately 250,000 soldiers died. And forever on blacks will be free in America
