  • 1st battle of bull run/Manassas junction

    30,000 inexperienced union troops under general Irvin McDowellattacked smaller confederate force led by P.G.T. Beauregard. Stonewall jackson drove the union back for a confederate victory.
  • George B. McClellan named general of army of Potomac

    Lincoln appointed him to head the union army in the east and to train the troops.
  • Battle of Shiloh/ Pittsburgh Landing

    union under general Grant commanding 40,000 troops. Confederate forces under Albert Sidney Johnston and P.G.T Beaurgard launched a suprise attack on union. Two day battle and very bloody
  • Emancipation proclamation issued

    Lincoln wrote that this would free all enslaved people in rebel territory. This did not actually free any enslaved person.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville/ Death of stonewall Jackson

    union had twice as many men as the confederates. Union being attack from front and beack. Confederacy won and pushed the union back. Stonewall Jackson shot by one of his own men in the arm, he had to get it cut off and died a week later.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    One of the most decisive battles of the war. Both sides found each other in the town and started the battle. Union retreated to cemetary hill. Lee makes descision to attack. Picketts charge was working but the union defeated the attack. The british and french decided not to help confederates
  • Battle of 2nd Bull run/ manassas

    Robert E. Lee and Stonewall jackson turned back General John Pope. confederacy won
  • Gettysburg addres

    Lincoln gave this shorty speech at the dedication of a national cemetary on the battlefield of Gettysburg.Opinion in the press was mixed, but everybody loved it.
  • Lee surrenders to Grant

    Lee wanted to fight on but when the Union captured the train carrying food Lee knew it was over. Grant and Lee met in a town called Appomattox court house, Virginia. Grant said that Lees soldiers could keep small firearms and horses and nobody would disturb the soldiers on the way home. Grant offered Lee food to feed his soldiers and Lee accepted.
