    The election of 1860 had 4 candidates but Abraham Lincoln won the election. He won after receiving 40% of all the votes, all of his votes came from the northern states. This election took place in Chicago, Illinois (Abraham Lincoln Elected President).
  • South Carolina Secedes

    South Carolina Secedes
    South Carolina was the first state to formally leave the federal Union in December of 1860. This was because Lincoln won the presidential election and South Carolina, along with many other states, wanted to keep their slaves. (South Carolina Secession)
  • Confederation Formed

    Confederation Formed
    The representatives from the seceded states came together to form a formal unified government. They met in Montgomery, Alabama on February 8, 1861. Jefferson Davis, of Mississippi, was the first president of the Confederate government.

    Early in the morning of April 12, 1861, shots were fired by the Confederate troops in South Carolina at Fort Sumter. The Union forces surrendered less than 34 hours after the first shots were fired (Civil War Begins).

    The first Battle of Bull Run was between the Confederate troops and the Union troops in Manassas Junction, Virginia on July 21, 1861. In the end the Confederate side won (History.com).
  • Battle of Monitor

    This battle was between the Confederates and the Union. The Confederates wanted to break the blockade that the Union had made. This was also the first naval battle. The outcome of the battle was very indecisive, it all depends on which side you’re looking at it from (Battle of Hampton Roads).
  • Battle of Shiloh

    The Battle of Shiloh was between the Union forces and the Confederacy army it took two days April 5, 1862- April 7, 1862 in Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee. This was the bloodiest battle at the time with having 23,000 dead and wounded. This was a victory for the Union forces. This battle also took the most capable leader, General Albert Johnston (National Geographic Society).

    The second Battle of Bull Run was between the Confederate army and the Union forces on August, 28, 1862. Robert E. Lee’s Confederate army won against the Union forces. McClellan’s cabinet pushed for him to be dismissed, however Lincoln kept him as commander (Second Battle of Bull Run).
  • Battle of Antietam

    The Battle of Antietam was the deadliest battle that took place on September 17, 1862 in Sharpsburg Maryland. This ended up being the deadliest battle of the Civil War. This showed the Union forces that they could stand against the Confederate army and actually win (Antietam).
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863 in Washington D.C. This proclamation stated that all enslaved people would be set free that were in rebellious states. This also allowed black people to fight in the Union army.
  • Siege of Vicksburg

    Siege of Vicksburg was a pretty long event that took place, May 18, 1863- July 4, 1863, in Mississippi. This was between the Confederates and the Union. At the end the Union claimed another win.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    The battle was between the Confederate and the Union, it lasted 3 days and took place in and around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This battle had the most casualties and was the turning point for the Civil war. The Union gained another victory with this battle (Battle History).
  • Lincoln Re-elected

    The northern states were very supportive and excited to learn that Abraham Lincoln was elected for his second term of presidency. The outcome of Lincoln’s re-election was that the Confederacy had collapsed 5 months after the re-election (Abraham Lincoln Reelected).
  • Robert E. Lee’s Surrender

    Robert E. Lee’s Surrender
    Robert Lee wished to retreat and meet with more Confederate troops in North Caroline, however they were stopped by the Union. When the Union stopped the Confederates, it caused Robert Lee to surrender to stop the war. His surrender took place in the Appomattox Court House Virginia. When he surrendered it officially ended the war on April 9, 1865 (American Civil War).
  • Lincoln Assassination

    Lincoln Assassination
    The night of April 14, 1865, Lincoln went to Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C. His life was cut short when a famous actor and a Confederate supporter, John Wilkes Booth, assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. This took place only 5 days after Robert Lee surrendered
