Civil War Events

  • Fort Sumter

    Lincoln sent supplies to a federal fort in the south which the south perceived as a threat and attacked the base. The south sent a bombardment at the fort, sparking the civil war.
  • First Battle of Bullrun

    The Union was expecting to easily crush the southern resistance, but they underestimated the southern force lead by Irvin McDowell and were defeated. There was about 22,000 casualities.
  • battle of Antietam

    General Lee of the confederate army invaded the north in order to gain the support of Britain and France. The north won and the total casualties measure up to 23,000.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    It was an order from president Lincon that all slaves in the rebel states would be considered free. This would ultimately make slaves in the south escape north to freedom weakening the confederates.
  • Formation of the 54th mass

    The 54th mass was the 1st infantry regiment that was comprised of blacks that escaped from the south. They then proceeded to help win multiple battles for the north.

    The end of the civil war started Reconstruction in which the south would reintegrate with the south, The north would pass laws to slowly get them back into the union.

    Fall of Vicksburg

    The Union, under the lead of General Grant, defeated the Confederate forces in the town. This split the confederacy and the total casualties would add up to 37,000 total.

    Battle of Gettysburg

    It was an invasion from the confederates lead by lee in hopes to end the civil war swiftly but failed to due to leaks. This lead to an estimated death count of 51,000.
  • Gettysburg Adress

    The Gettysburg Adress was spoken by Abraham Lincon and He stated to not let the fallen soldiers die in vain. This would ultimately give morale to the union.

    Sherman's March to the Sea

    It was the military campaign to split the south once again. He broke railroads along the way making it harder for the confederacy to get supplies.
  • Congress passes the 13th amendment

    The law was passed by congress and prevented people from being enslaved and freed enslaved people. Interestingly enough this did not stop people in prison doing work against their will for no pay.
  • Creation of Freedman's Bureau

    The Freedman's bureau's purpose was to reintegrate freed slaves into society. It help financially and would connect sepearated families caused by slavery.
  • Surrender at Appomattox Court House

    Lee surrenders to the Union at a courthouse in Appomattox. This effectively ended the civil war.
  • Assassination of Abraham Lincon

    President Abraham Lincon was assassinated by a ploy lead by John Wilks Booth. Lincoln was shot in the head by Booth and would go into a coma and later die from his injures.
  • 14th Amendment

    It was a law passed that grants citizenship to all of those born or naturalized in the united states. This included former slaves that were recently freed.
  • 15th amendment

    A law was passed giving the right to vote to black Americans. It would still be a while until all black Americans could vote though.
  • End of Reconstruction

    Political comprises that Rutherford B. Haze would be elected and Federal troops out of the south. This effectively ended the force to keep the south following the agreements made, marking the end of reconstruction.
  • Supreme court case Plessy vs. Ferguson

    A supreme court decision was made to uphold racial segregation under the guise that they were " separate but equal". This was led up to because a man refused to sit in a spot for colored people because he was 1/8 black.
