    The Mexican War ended with the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The treaty was made to end the war and extend the boundaries for the US by 525,000 square miles. The war came to place due to president Polk wanting land in Texas and in the end, the US gained 55% of Mexico's land because of this dispute.

    Fugitive Slave Act Passed
    The Fugitive Slave Act was passed as part of the Compromise of 1850; which was between Southern slave-holding interests and Northern Free-Soilers. The Act came into place because if slaves were to run off to another state for freedom, they will be held in custody and put into work if they owe any past labor still.

    Bleeding Kansas occurred over whether or not slavery would be outlawed in Kansas or not. Fights out broke in Kansas between those who were pro-slave and those who were against them. Brown, and those who followed him, began ravishing Free State establishments and from there they continued to invade Free State establishments and murdering those involved with them.
  • Dred Scott vs. Sanford

    Dred Scott vs. Sanford
    Fred Scott and his wife Harriet had sued for their freedom. They believed they should have been freed where they had been living in a state where slavery was prohibited. The lawsuit ended up being carried on for 11 years and Dredd had lost his case. However, he then filed a new federal suit and that was soon to be denied as well as they claimed "enslaved people were not citizens of the United States".

    John Browns raid on the Harper's Ferry resulted in overtaking the federal armory, arsenal, and rifle factory. This raid was done by thousands of people and they overtook many places, The point of the raid was to "disrupt the security of investing in people as property".

    The election of Lincoln cause an uproar. Lincoln was strongly supportive of free states and wanted to put an end to slavery, but the south wanted someone who was pro-slavery. After Lincoln was elected, they began meetings on whether or not they went through with a succession. However, on December 20th, 1860, SC decided to secede.

    First Secession Columbia, SC
    Columbia, South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union. This secession was the outcome of Lincoln being elected. The South states seceded because they did not want to be under a Union where Lincoln would be pressing for free slave states.
