The Articles of Confederation became effective. They established how the US government should work. -

The Constitution created a stronger federal government. Southern states felt the Constitution would not allow them to act independently. -
Missouri Compromised
Missouri Compromise admitted Missouri as a slave state& Maine as a free state. -
Fugitive Slave Law
Runaway slaves would be caught in the North and returned to the South. Many Northerners disagreed. -
Republic Party
Republican Party formed. Opposed slavery. Abraham Lincoln became the presidential candidate. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Now popular sovereignty(voting by the citizens) would decide if a new state would be a free or slave state. Since Kansas and Nebraska were both north of the land acquired by the Louisiana Purchased, it overturned the compromise of 1820. Anti- and pro-slavery groups rushed to Kansas border to vote. Violent fighting broke out and became known as Bleeding Kansas. -
South Carolina seceded
Southern sates ere upset from Abraham Lincolns election and South Carolina seceded. -
Open fire on Fort Sumter
Lincoln sent supplies to the fort, but the Confederate forces blocked the supplies. Confederate forces opened fire on Fort Sumter. The Civil War had officially began. -

president Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth as he watched a play at Ford's Theater. He died early the next day. -

General Lee surrenders his army at the Appomattox Court House. The Civil War was officially over. -
