Now popular sovereignty(voting by the citizens) would decide if a new state would be a free or slave state. Since Kansas and Nebraska were both north of the land acquired by the Louisiana Purchased, it overturned the compromise of 1820. Anti- and pro-slavery groups rushed to Kansas border to vote. Violent fighting broke out and became known as Bleeding Kansas.
