    Little Rock, Arkansas decides to integrate schools. National Guard prevent entry into school for blacks. 1000 paratroopers are needed to escort students into the school, which leads to the Governor closing schools for the year.

    Martin Luther King announces a non-violent resistance to wrongs of American society. First direct announcement of intent to resist by Martin Luther King.
  • March on Washington

    200,000 gathered in protest and witnessed the delivery of speeches, including Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" Speech. This was one of the largest gatherings of protest of the Civil Rights Movement and it proved the strength of those fighting for civil rights.

    Bomb planted in church explodes in a church in Birmingham, Alabama, killing 4 young black girls. This event attracted national media attention and heated up protests.
