  • 13th Amendment-African American Movement

    Amendment passed by President Abraham Lincoln that abolished slavery. This is significant because it freed slaves and showed everyone the government was ready to take a step in the right direction
  • 14th Amendment-African American Movement

    14th Amendment-African American Movement
    Rights of citizenship, due process of law, and equal protection of the law. The 14th amendment has become one of the most used amendments in court to date regarding the equal protection clause.
  • 15th Amendment-African American Movement

    This amendment gave African Americans voting rights. This was significant because it was taking a step away from segregation in law and was made to help them get representation in the government
  • Plessy v. Ferguson-African American Movement

    The Supreme court case that established “Separate but equal” was constitutional. This is significant because it led to jim crow laws and more discrimination against African Americans.

    National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, oldest civil rights organization which worked for equality through court cases. Significant due to the victoires they had, including Brown vs. Board of Education.
  • 19th Amendment-Women's Movement

    Women were granted the right to vote/ Cannot be denied the right to vote based on sex. This was significant because women could now have a say in what was happening in the government.

    Court case that declared “separate but equal” unconstitutional. This was significant because children could now theoretically go to the same public school without getting discriminated against. All public schools were integrated.

    Political/Social protest against racial segregation of the public transportation system. This was significant because after the year long protest the Supreme court declared segregation of busses unconstitutional.

    Civil rights organizations formed to work towards achieving equality through non-violent civil disobedience. Important because they organized a bus boycott against Montgomery's segregated buses
