  • Jackie Robinson

    Jackie Robinson
    Jackie Robinson was the first African American baseball player to go to the major leagues. He faced a lot of discrimination, death threats, and intimidation. He was the Rookie of the Year and he won the pennant with other players.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    The NAACP challenged the idea of separate, but equal schools to Supreme Court. All the judges said that was unconstitutional. The result was public schools were to intermix races even if they did not want to.
  • Montgomery Boycott

    Montgomery Boycott
    This was the idea of protesting that African Americans had to sit in the back of the bus. This was the first big stand some African Americans took against segregation. Rosa Parks was one who was told to give up her seat and go to the back of the bus, but she refused and was put in jail. This is was stirred up the Montgomery Boycott.
  • Woolworth's Lunch Counter

    This event consisted of four college students who refused to leave the lunch counter at Woolworths drug store before they get served. They did this to stop discrimination in eating places.
  • Freedom Rides

    Freedom Rides
    The Freedom Riders was a trip from DC to New Orleans on two different buses. African Americans sat in the front of the buses and they used white restrooms when they stopped. A mob in Alabama attack one bus and the other is bombed. Then Kennedy stepped in and made sure the riders were protected.
  • Albany Movement

    This was a campaign to challenge all segregation. One month later Martin Luther King Jr. joined the campaign to help further the process
  • I have a dream speech

    I have a dream speech
    The "I have a dream speech" was said by Martin Luther King Jr during the March on Washington about how someday I dream of African American being able to sit by white men.
  • March of Washington

    March of Washington
    An estimate of 250,000 people marched to ended racism. This was the end of the Civil Rights Movement. The March on Washington consisted of no violence and brought all differences races and religious beliefs together. It helped to make the civil rights movement pass.
  • 24th Amendment

    The 24th Amendment banned the poll tax for voting. This tax was used to prevent African Americans from voting This made it so more African Americans were more engaged in politics after the it was passed.
  • New York Riots

    New York Riots
    Riots began in Harlem when residents took the streets and launched a riot. This ended in about 500 arrests. People went into cities breaking windows, causing fires, and looting.
  • Swan V Charlotte- Mecklenburg Board Of Education

    In this Supreme Court, case it took Brown vs the Board of Education a step further. They bused students to other schools so race would be more equal, between black and white students.
  • The Equal Opportunity Act

    This amended the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to apply to local, state, and federal governments and allow the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to bring suits itself.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation Act

    This act prohibited discrimination from happening in federal programs. It changed programs that receive money and it changes the federal government.
  • Thomas Bradley

    Thomas Bradley
    He was a 20 year reigning African American Mayor of Los Angeles. He was elected 4 times in a row, which was the longest serving African American Mayor up to that point in time.
  • Patricia Roberts Harris

    She was the first African-American woman to hold a cabinet position ever, and this was with Jimmy Carter. She helped Jimmy see the urban development and helped it improve.
  • Affirmative Action

    Affirmative Action
    Although passed in 1961, it has many positive affects on present day. It was about closing economic debt between blacks and whites. To change this they increased hiring African Americans. This also encouraged more equal enrollment in universities.
  • Voters Right Act

    Voters Right Act
    The Voters Rights Act of 1965 was passed by congress. It has been renewed four times. Most recently in 2006.This was partly the result of the 24th Amendment in the constitution. People didn't need to vote and it changed the federal government to monitor states.

    In 1995 Bernard Harris Jr became the first African American to walk in space. We heard his sister-in-law speak at the space center. The space mission has been about using technology using a team to get people to space.

    Starting on this day in 2004 we started the idea where every player in baseball wears 42 to memorialize Jackie's experience in the major leagues.
  • The first African American got elected

    President Obama was the first African president ever. "If there is anyone who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time who still questions the power of our democracy tonight is your answer."
