    Asa Philip Randolph

    Randolph was a famous Civil Rights activist during the Civil Rights movement and the labor movement. He led the famous March on Washington, that included around 200,000 people and had many famous activists speak, including Martin Luther King Jr. He also inspired the "freedom budget", which began the switch of focus to economical problems near the end of the Civil Rights movement, that began the downfall and the end of the main part of the Civil Rights movement.

    Lyndon B. Johnson

    Lyndon B. Johnson was the 36th US President, and served from 1963 to 1969. He was known at the beginning of his term for passing many bills and being extremely liberal at the time. Johnson hired people of color and women into high government positions, and was committed to the reform of many parts of the society. He passed many bills that pushed equality and desegregation, including voting rights, affirmative action, and the Civil Rights Bill of 1964.

    Malcolm Little or Malcolm X

    Malcolm X was one of the main faces of the Black Muslims or Nation of Islam, an organization based around black power. Organizations like Nation of Islam were based on a more violent approach to Civil Rights issues, which resulted in more negative ideas about the movement as a whole. Malcolm X was mainly known for his time as one of the leaders of Nation of Islam, and his violent and negative views of black power or force. Malcolm resulted in more backwards movement than forwards.

    Martin Luther King Jr.

    Martin Luther King Jr. was a minister and famous civil rights activist that had major contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. King was known for his leadership in organizations like the SCLC and the major nonviolence movement and form of protest. King also led many marches on Washington D.C., and was one of the main faces of the Civil Rights Movement as a whole.
  • Malcolm X becomes the new leader of the Nation of Islam

    Malcolm X was released from prison in 1952, and he became a leader of the Nation of Islam due to his beliefs in black power and his idolization of the previous leader and founder, Elijah Muhammad. The Nation of Islam was a backward movement for the Civil Rights movement because it created a bad image in southerner's heads of African Americans, and it made it much harder for activists to be taken seriously or seen as civilized.
  • Dwight D Eisenhower becomes the President of the United States

  • Brown vs Board of Education

    Brown vs Board of Education was the final court decision that declared discrimination and racism in public school settings unconstitutional. Brown vs Board of Education was significant towards the Civil Rights movement because it began to force desegregation in schools, and was one of the first times the government had gotten involved in the Civil Rights movement.
  • Southern Christian Leadership Conference is Founded

    Martin Luther King Jr. founds the Southern Leadership Conference (SCLC), an African American organization that focused on ending discrimination using nonviolence. The SCLC was a forward movement for the civil rights movement because it was the leading organization for most nonviolent protests and marches, and it was lead by one of the main Civil Rights activists, Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Little Rock Nine transfers to Central High school

    Nine African-American students transferred to Central High School, an all-white school, in attempt to desegregate southern schools. The response from southern whites was violent, including police, riots, and serious damage. The little rock nine was a forward movement because it slowly forced southerners to accept and understand African Americans in their daily lives, which slowly created desegregation in the south.
  • Supreme Court Rules Segregation in public facilities unconstitutional

    The supreme court ruling led to sit ins and the freedom rides, which consisted of African Americans going into the deep south to test the south, and see if the south was truly desegregated. The ruling was a forward movement for the Civil Rights movement because it required the government to get involved, and began actual desegregation in many parts of the United States.
  • John F Kennedy becomes the President of the United States

  • Freedom Riders leave Washington D.C. and begin Freedom Rides

    African-Americans and white Americans left in two buses from Washington D.C. and followed a route to the deep south to test and see whether the south was desegregated or not. The Freedom Rides were met with violent riots, bus fires, and protests from racist southerners. The Freedom Rides were a forward movement for the Civil Rights movement because it gained National attention, which led to the government getting involved in Civil Rights issues.
  • The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom Occurs

  • Lyndon B Johnson becomes President of the United States

    John F Kennedy is assassinated, and his vice president Lyndon B Johnson is immediately signed in as the next president.
  • The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is passed, outlawing discrimination in public facilities and schools

  • The Black Panther Party is formed

    The Black Panther Party was formed by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton, and consisted of young African Americans, often armed, leading a power based movement that included gun battles with police. The Black Panther Party was a backwards movement for the Civil Rights movement because it painted African Americans in the way they didn't want to be seen, and made it difficult for them to be taken seriously or seen as civilized human beings.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated

    Before a planned march on Washington D.C., Martin Luther King Jr. was shot by a sniper and killed. The assassination was a backward movement for the Civil Rights movement because the main face of Civil Rights organizations and activists was gone, along with many other people that were killed in the late 1960's riots after the SCLC had turned it's focus to the economic problems with Johnson's administration.
