The US Supreme Court ruled that state laws establishing seperate schools for blacks and whites was unconstitional. Later segregation was ruled a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth amendment of the US constitution. The decision was to integrate schools. The Sibley commission recommended that the state accept the federal decision to desegregate the schools.

The Albany movement was a desegregation movement coalition formed in Albany, Georgia. The SNCC and NAACP and Martin Luther King Jr. led the movement. The Albany Movement was mobilized thousands of citizens and attracted nationwide attention. The movement failed to accomplish its goals because of a determermined opposition.

As a young lawyer Maynard Jackson won election as vice-mayor of Atlanta in 1969. 4 years later Atlanta voters elected him as mayor. Therefore making him the first african american to head a major southern city.
